My wife's wrists have taken lots of abuse mountain biking
over the years (20 so far). Any recommendations for a wrist
guard/brace that works while riding?
Thanks, Shawn

I have used rollerblade wrist braces in the past. They hold
your wrist nice and straight and protect them from breaking
in an endo. I use them when I ride on mostly rocky terrain.

When I broke my wrist, the physio doctor told me the best
thing to do is to work on strengthening it and not to use a
guard or brace. Using one will actually weaken that area
because it hinders the movement and the ability to use the
tendons and muscles in that part of your arm/hand.

I used to ride at a skatepark in the UK and was pretty
friendly with the owner. We were discussing these wrist
braces and he said they were terrible things. Provided you
fall the "right way", then yes, they do protect your wrists.
Fall slightly awkwardly and the plastic inserts act as a
fulcrum. He claimed that he'd seen more kids break their
wrists whilst wearing them than not.

Did the wrong way result in something analogous to a boot
top fracture? Did he elaborate on what was the right way and
what was the wrong way to fall?

Good advice. She would only wear it riding to prevent
additional damage. Such as it is, she's to the point where
she's reluctant to ride at all. She knows a local PT. I'll
suggest she ask her about wrist exercises.

Hmmm... Interesting. I always liked these things when I used
to rollerblade. The only way i knew how to stop was do a 360
which didn't always work. I can't even count how many times
these things saved my wrists and my hands from getting
scraped to bits. On the bike I tend to fall to my left a
lot. My left wrist always seems to take the brunt of the
fall and that is why I started using the bands on rougher
rides. I don't use them most of the time. Just the
occassional "nothing but rocks" ride.

That sounds like a very good idea. For that matter, seeing a
doctor first is probably even better. (I don't know how it
works for wrists, but my PT office wouldn't take me without
having seen a doctor first to make sure they were treating
the right problem.)

She is the doc. :-) You're right, she should have one of her
partners check her out first (both mountain bikers too FTM)

I'm sure you could suggest a couple... ;~p

<Googles> Yes, that sort of idea.

No, I'm not even sure he knew himself.

I used these for about a year after I did an endo-to-handstand/dead-
stop that left both wrists pretty sore for a while.
Only use them for real nasty stuff now, but they don't get
in the way like skater/snowboarder guards do.

Try the SixSixOne Wristwraps. After my crash this winter I
used them to spare my very sore wrists some further abuse.
They are designed for biking, and work pretty well, too.

I bought one of these for riding following my little mishap
earlier in the year. While the stiff padded inserts would
probably provide protection from impact during a fall, I
don't think it provides much support while riding -
certainly a lot of shock was getting up through the bar into
my wrist & arm.
The surgical brace I was given by the hospital after I came
out of the cast is much better -

Much more support due to the steel strut that runs along the
underside from palm to fore-arm, and more likely to prevent
injury arising from shocks trasmitted up the wrist during a
flat palm/breaking fall kind of crash. Wrist movement is
obviously impaired, but fortunately my hand seems to sit at
the right angle for riding.
You will be able to google your way to somewhere selling
these kind of supports - medical supplies, physio supplies,
something like that.
