Wow, what an honest guy. He also sounds smart and was determined to do the
right thing...no wonder they got rid of him.

What we SEE is that Gerard did a good job after those at USAC were
driving the body into the dump. Remember that even guys like Casey
Kerrigan at NCNCA were so disgusted with the USCF that they dropped
out. So it wouldn't have taken a genius to make enough improvements to
turn things around.

The real problem is that now that everything is back on line and
working OK it will take another 5 years of neglect to being about
another revolution and Les is now getting too old to fight them and
there's no one else standing in line to take his place.

Yes, lots of folks critisized Les, but time is proving him right. Let's
see if his other predictions come true.

I feel bad for Gerard. I really didn't have much faith in anyone hired
by the board of directors. Over time I saw some real improvements and I
was wondering if USA Cycling was changing for the better. Now that they
fired GB, we know the board is still up to their old tricks.

I formed NEBRA because USAC had slipped so badly -- NEBRA was created
as a vehicle to go it alone if things worsened. When I met and dealt
with Gerard, I knew he was business-like, honest and would improve
things. His departure is certainly troubling.

though I've been fighting cycling corruption continuously since 1978.

At the time Gerard got fired I was off in Egypt, crawling through
pyramids and temples, but I found a message from him when I got home and
we had a nice chat about strategies for exposing the corruption of the
cabal that has now consolidated its grip on USAC.

I believe that there will be some more interesting revelations as we go
forward and would like to think that this may move at least some
segments of our sport to reconsider breaking away. I know that most
riders are politically apathetic in that they "Just wanna ride my bike,"
but perhaps some race organizers and regional associations will now
review the balance between benefits and costs of working within a
corrupt organization.

Les, I know that you're fit as a fiddle now. My concern is that since
the racing is back doing OK for now and the USAC is unlikely to mess
with it, I think it will take five or more years for the pack to begin
detecting problems again and start dropping off.
