  1. The World LD Tri Champs were on (replayed) one of the Foxtel sports
channels yesterday. It appeared to be a non-drafting race, althought
they didn't say so. It was 4km/120km/30km. The guy who came in first on
the bike did his 120km a few minutes faster than my 90km in Cairns! I
think he was only a bit over 40km/h but that was for 120km non-drafting
after swimming 4km, I was impressed. Then the runners were doing it in
about 1h 55, 30km in only 20 minutes longer than I do 21 km, how
humbling. It looked like a great race, biassed towards runners and
swimmers for a change instead of just cyclists, so that it was a bit
more balanced. No offence to those on a.b who claim running is [censored] just
because they can't do it ;-P

PS Went for my first run yesterday, 1 hour on the trails at Karawatha
Forest on the Southside of BrisVegas, got massively lost by bush-bashing
but it was heaps of fun. I plan on going for a bike ride this arvo. My
    tonsilitis is at last gone!

I was impressing myself yesterday on the first ride leg ( 2 rides of
8km) at 32kmh (last year I was 27kmh) until the next wave caught me and
blasted past as if I was standign still. I hate the sound of the carbon
    wheel set brigade approaching.

Oh, so true. I had never heard them until Noosa 2003, and they snuck up
on me heading up the hill, and it freaked me - I nearly shat myself!

    Oooh.. :-P

I can run.. just not very fast. I think Monagetty(sp?) was
faster over the Noosa 10k (~14min?) than I can run 5k... but
lets see how fast he runs after I hip&shoulder his pissant 50kg
    into the scrub.. ;-)

What's the deal with Ironman AND LD tri's? Is it just so the
swimmers have a chance at winning a world title?

That Noosa tri seemed to have a lot of drafting in a non-draft
    race..

92kph down the hill would be fun wearing only undies..

Did you think that was aimed at you? Sounds like a guilty conscience...
    tee hee!
It's a bit depressing, until my PB at Gold Coast, the women's world
marathon record was about 25 minutes longer than my half marathon. Ha ha
but my PB and category 10th kicked that one down.

Ironman is just a specialty long distance. There's short course etc. and
sprints and supersprints but these aren't set distances, but Olympic,
half- and full- Ironman are set. And they've got way too much cycling.
An average age grouper would spend, in a half ironman, a bit over half
an hour swimming, a bit under three hours cycling, and about two hours
    running. How is that fair?!

i can run and running (on its own) is [censored].. running is only useful when you do duathlons (says me the ex duathlete 😉 or when the hill is too steep to ride ur mtb up.

swimming on the other hand.. who'd do tris??? swimming is truly for lost souls (i cant race swim for [censored]) 😄

10k in 14min? Mona was fast but not that fast - I think you mean he does 5km in 14min. Craig Mottram ran the 10km leg at Noosa in about 32min (!) and won the Open Male (non-professional) category.

LD championship? I didn't know there was such a distance. I thought the long races were half-IM and IM. I'm going to qualify for Forster 2006, so I'd better learn to swim a bit faster...

I just picked up a lottery slot for IM Australia. Don't know whether to
take it or not. It will be a lot of pain, what with not training...

Years ago I was just getting into cycling and had been training for my first
local club race. Unfortunately it fell on the same day as a half marathon
run in another town, so I decided to do both. I did the half marathon in
just under an hour and a half and then jumped in my car to drive 50km back
home to do the bike race, eating handfuls of bread along the way. Needless
to say I got whipped in the 80 km road race and to add insult to injury I
got a flat about two km from the finish. Not having a spare I rode along on
the flat tyre until someone came out looking for me and picked me up. I was
determined to ride to the finish line but they pointed out it would do my
rim no good so I packed it in. That was over 10 years ago and is the only
race I didn't finish, and that includes long canoe races (Avon Descent) and
multisport races that include horse riding.

I had to do that to my first Duathlon earlier this year. Picked up the
new OCR2 the day before and needed to learn how to use STI before the
race. Anyone watching me ride down to that race would have killed
themselves laughing everytime I hit a hill and shifted the wrong way.
Luckily the race course only required a couple of gear changes, but I
would shift about 20 metres ahead of time in case I went the wrong way.

I got *shock, horror* aero bars on my bike 2 days before my first ever
triathlon, and lo and behold the bad weather set in, and, being a
novice, didn't want to ride my bike in the wet - wasn't that confident
yet. I also realised that, while practising getting my feet into shoes
that were already attached to the pedals, I hadn't actually practised
getting on the bike in the first place, or running with it. So my
training session consisted of, in my apartment block basement, which is
not wide nor long: run a few metres, jump on, turn 180 (also hadn't
practiced that), feet in, turn, drop onto the bars, hop up, turn, drop,
hop up, turn, take feet out of shoes, turn, dismount and run with bike.
And I did that over and over again. But I reckon I looked really good at
    the race...
