I used to have to deal with that a bunch in my old job - I was the guy being
dispatched for a lot of locates because we owned a lot of cable in the area.
The worst would be when another department would need a hole "real quick"
and jump in the backhoe and dig up some cable. They hit fiber once and it
was like $20k when it was all said and done. Sitting in a muddy trench
splicing a 200 pair cable in the rain really sucks.

I bet you'll call before digging next time!

Nope, I called Dig-Safe......
This apparently was an extra coil or two of cable they just threw out there
instead of trimming the ends at the end of the pull. SO when they came out
to mark the burried lines this was not marked.

Whew! What a relief that must have been. I've experienced that too. We had
lots of abandoned cable around.
I'd locate, they dig, hit some old cable and call us. We'd be so bummed
until we figured out it was "trick cable".

Oh, and the 200 pair was copper. Lotsa beans and icky pick. Our fiber cables
would have maybe a dozen strands. Each one would definitely be more tedious
(before cleavers were commonplace especially), but I'd still take a dozen
over 200 any day!

Actually I'm thinking that this would be a good opportnity to"install" an
outdoor phone jack on the back patio.
(use a RJ-11 jack to "splice" the two ends of the severed line ;-)
That way I don't need to run inside to answer the phone while relaxing or
grilling on the back deck.

Just neede to find a (weatherproof) outdoor phone jack now.....

Well, I ran all the 220V circuits for my cabinet saw, bandsay, dusct
collector, etc out in the workshop/garage, Ohh come to thi9nk of it, I wired
