hmmmm, I don't want to buy 'cheap' shorts... The pearl izumi's I have are
far from cheap and have held up for years. I want shorts that are high
quality like P.I. with thin chamois. ARGH. .. don't want to feel like I have
a dump in my pants when I am riding
"Long life" may or may not be important. Shorts can get ruined in a
crash, regardless of what they cost. The lower the cost, the lower the
loss in that situation. Also, if one "gets sick" of the style, color,
or whatever, and wants to get new/replacement clothing for this sort of
reason, it is nice to have not invested too much.
I've owned the spectrum of cost/quality in shorts, and price is not
always well correlated with quality. One common fault is the elastic in
both grippers and the lycra can deteriorate. I've had medium to
medium-high cost shorts fail in this way. (Cheap also, of course.)
I suggested "cheap" simply because they do sometimes have the desirable
thin chamois, not because they are cheap. My decision on whether to buy
"cheap" rests on a personal valuation of fit, tailoring, and
appearance. If that valuation isn't met, it doesn't matter if they are
cheap. Sometimes they (cheap) are quite acceptable in tailoring, fit,
and style. Sometimes they suck. Moreover, if they last 2-3 years but
were inexpensive, why care if they deteriorate? Just throw them away.
(And you never risked destroying expensive clothing in a crash.) It is
only a bike ride.
I'm not sure how important chamois even is. I don't like thick either
and I don't like padded saddles. Really, it is whatever works for you.
I don't pay much attention to brand anymore, so no comment there.
