  1. Has anyone ever gone through withdrawal from not running. I
am taking two weeks off for my tibial stress fracture and
have been feeling really antsy. Sometimes I get this tension
in my chest that makes me feel like exploding. I had some
trouble sleeping for a couple of nights but that seems to
    have worked itself out.

I read an article awhile ago about researchers at UW-Madison
who had exercised rats for 4 weeks on a treadmill everyday.
After the 4 weeks the rats were not allowed to exercise
anymore. They exhibited similar symptoms to rats who go
through heroin withdrawal. The exercise-withdrawal rats also
showed similar MRI brain scans to heroin withdrawal rats.

I can't wait to start running again.

  2. Oh yes. I can identify. I think it has something (in
addition to brain neurotransmitters) to do with the body's
threshold for releasing nitric oxide (NO), thusly the tight
    chest feeling (constricted lung muscles).

NO is the chemical that affects blood vessel relaxation (and
BP levels). Exercise stimulates release of NO.

  3. I remember reading somewhere that two symptoms of abrupt
cessation of regular running are restlessness and
irritability. I don't remember where this was but I recall
it being some sort of legit site.

  4. I get a bit of rush on my rest days. I suspect it because
blood is freed up from the muscles for other uses. I get
more hungry and horny. I also start excreting a lot of water
after missing a run. I'm subscousiously storing it up for
all the sweating, but it starts coming out if I dont use it.

I get pretty agitated when I'm not running. My temper is
shorter, I get moody. There is something about running that
keeps me balanced. Last year it seemed to be one thing after
another that kept me from running consistantly from August
on. First was a hip strain, then bike accident, then it was
a twisted ankle while running. By December I was dieing to
go for a run but I knew that would make my injuries worse.
But I hung in there and was running normally in January.
    Much to my relief.

I don't know if I would call it withdrawal in my case, but
it wasn't a psychologically nice place to be. Having to have
dropped in and out of training due to this or that injury, I
would get right down irritable during the non-running days
and weeks. All of which makes me more thankful for the
blessing of being able to run for over 4 months straights
    injury free.

Yet another voice to the affirmative.

I'm normally an easy going, laid-back personality, even
before I started running. but I do feel stress when not
running. Muscles can tense up and I can find sitting to be
very uncomfortable, no matter what chair I use. I haven't
had it so bad as to interfere with sleep.

    It can be addictive.

Here's to your next "hit/run" May it be soon!

Here's some advice (i.e. things that have helped me A LOT
    when I can't run):

*NO COFFEE! I don't kow if it's a personal thing, but coffee
makes me stressed, edgy and, basically, feel like [censored] if i
don't a)run and b) drink in moderation. For years I had been
drinking a cup every morning without even thinking about
effects a stimulant had on me. So, i took a break. to my
surprise, i felt icredibly relaxed and i felt good. for the
first time in many many years, i didn't feel like [censored]
(without running). (although, i started to run less, but i
started to drink a little - two to three sips - BEFORE A
RUN, not in the morning. so, i guess this goes to you and
all coffee drinkers: I'm not saying that you should stop
drinking coffee altogether, but just think about what you're
putting in your body (same thing goes with natural herbs-ginseng-
stopped taking that because it made me irritable). SO, i
think you should give coffee a break for a few days, just to
see how it feels. i didn't notice any caffeine headache, but
if you are afraid, try drinking less. anyhow, i don't know
if you drink coffee, but for those who do....

*lots of other endorphin releasers: COCOA!, spicy foods (i
like to drop some tobasco sauce on my tongue!), some other
form of pain (if you're into that.....maybe hit your head
against the wall once in a while), find some sun....

*Don't think about running. whenever i'm not running, i tend
to think to myself, "i would feel so much better if i was
running" or "this would be so much more fun if i had ran."
especially since you don't have any choice, put it out of
    your mind.

    hopefully some of this helps

The war on terror is not a figure of speech. It is an
inescapable calling of our generation. The terrorists are
offended not merely by our policies -- they are offended by
our existence as free nations. No concession will appease
their hatred. No accommodation will satisfy their endless
demands. Their ultimate ambitions are to control the peoples
of the Middle East, and to blackmail the rest of the world
with weapons of mass terror. There can be no separate peace
with the terrorist enemy. Any sign of weakness or retreat
simply validates terrorist violence, and invites more
violence for all nations. The only certain way to protect
our people is by early, united, and decisive action.
