Stopped at the lights on Johnston St, I hear a comment from behind “So are you planning another breakaway tonight, I’m getting on your wheel.” Hmmm, slightly different tactics from last week, lessons to be learnt. I was going to make sure I was aware of the riders around me this week, last week was a bit of a blur!
Decided to sit at the back (literally) for a few laps, to give the legs a chance to get going. A comment from a fellow rider “We’re too far back, we need to move up”, Sheesh there’s another 25 min to go, what’s the hurry!
After bludging for a few laps, decided I may as well move up a little, but not too far. The aim was to do the minimum effort until the business end. I was conscious to keep the cadence higher, as I didn’t spin enough last week. Just sat in the middle of the bunch for the rest of the race.
Two guys went off the front with 3 laps to go, but was happy to leave them out there, and watch from a distance. If they were still out in front, then I would do something about it on the last lap. Same as last week, moved up with about 2 laps to go, and made my move on the bell lap..but no sprinting this time like a madman. Just sat up behind the leader, who was now coasting.
Nearly got sandwiched coming off the sweeper, made sure at all costs that I was the first into that hairpin, surprised they allowed me to do it without much fuss. Then the sprint up the hill, and as Gags pointed out to me, I made a mistake which I didn’t realise I’d made, I sat down…oops. For some reason my sub-conscious said sit, where I should have clicked up another gear..well that’s not going to happen again, you can be sure of that.
Not sure in the end what the margin was between us and third, I think Dave A said it was about 10m. I wasn’t entirely sure if it was a sprint for 1st/2nd or 3rd/4th as I thought I heard 3rd coming across the line.
Congrats Gags, happy you got the win, if it was someone else I would have been peeved.
It was a very messy bunch in D grade, especially coming into the hairpin, I’ll make sure I stay clear of some riders if I see them on the road!
Very happy with my 2nd place.
