1. Just when I was naive enough to think that we were at last seeing a drug/doping free tour today's news about Vino brings it all crashing down...but yesterday's recovery was obviously just too good to be true - no wonder he knew he was going to win!

Why, why, why?

2. Was He Caught Doping???

3. I just checked velo news, and, from what it said, Vino tested positive.

4. Yeh, caught with someone else's red cells in his body!

5. A real kick in the gut!!!

Not really - it's otherwise known as a blood transfusion - it's why we donate!

8. yea i know that smartA$$. but doing it to give yourself a competitive edge? that gross, disgusting, wierd, whatever you want to call it!

9. I'm still super-new to cycling and I'm just confused as to how a blood transfusion would help with a time-trial and such.

Was it someone else's blood? Or his own saved, highly oxygenated blood?
I just did some reading. So, it is someone else's blood.
It's just like the Tyler Hamilton thing, huh.
Oh well. It wouldn't be the tour without a doping scandal.

The short answer is the extra hemoglobin increases the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the muscles, which is usually the bottleneck for aerobic performance.

Just doping is worth a 5-20% increase in performance.
