  1. Will I still be welcome here after my gastric bypass surgery? I know
how some of you feel but I guess no one can really no the chamber of
horrors I live in each and everyday. I am slowly dying....... Im up to
#400 pounds again. In early December all the sudden my knee went out
and I couldnt walk. #400 plus no knee = one incredibly debilitated fat
girl.I have low carbed at 20 to 40 carbs a day and ate 8 carbs for each
pound I weighed and tweeked that multiple times only to get maybe a 3
pound a month loss. My Hba1c panel came back a good 5.8 and my
cholesterol is 175. My doc says my Insulin Resistancy and Diabetes is
really playing a role in keepin me fat. I see no light at the end of
the tunnel and I am miserable. I got so deperate last month I went to
see a surgeon in Seattle. I have chosen a low profile man who doesn't
advertise. He charges $4500 himself and the rest of the bill incurred
is anesthesia, surgical assistants fees, and the 4 day hospital stay.
Total of recieving this tool to loss weigh aorund $14 thousand. I am
having the proximal Roux NY gastric bypass. National morbidity average
is 1/200 and this guy is 1/400. The ones who have died have been older,
had severe medical problems, wheel chair bound and on oxygen. I'm 42
and have diabetes, sleep apnea, newly diagnosed degenerative
osteoarthritis and am 5'2" with a BMI of at least 70 I'm sure, and am
    on no medication.
While some of you dont know me, some of you have known me and my
struggle for at least 4 years now. I chose to be REAL miserable for a
time and see light at the tunnel. My life is passing me by and I am
missing out on all of my little girls activites because I cant walk
good. The doc expects me to be down a minimium of 88 pounds in the next
90 days and 176 down by my first year anniversary. I dont want to die
slowly anymore. Less than a pound a week weight loss for some one as
obese as I doesnt cut it.
Anyway the good news is the post op diet consists of clear liquid for
one week, then pureed food for 3 months then low carb moderate fat the
    rest of my life.
My surgery is scheduled for the 31st of January. For those of you who
support me please keep in touch with me.
    Thank you, Laureen

  3. Hi Laureen,
I'm gonna top post this time because I feel like it.

I'm sorry you're miserable and wish like hell you didn't have to
consider surgery - but only because of the risk involved in any major
surgery. The type of surgery doesn't matter. I'd be just as worried
if you were having your gallbladder out or something.

I can only speak for myself but you most certainly *will* be welcome
by me. 'Specially since you'll have to low-carb after surgery anyway.
    :-)

People who give a [censored] really just want you to be healthy Laureen. If
this is the path you have to take then so be it. I just hope it's an
    uneventful one.

    Take care,
    Carmen

  6. 8 calories times 400 pounds is 3200 calories per day. You report losing 3
pounds per month. Compare to when I was about 300 pounds, losing 2.3 pounds
per week. I was eating about 1430 calories per day per Fitday. That is
    about 5 calories per pound.

After surgery, as I understand it, you can expect to be eating about 1200
calories per day. 1430 calories voluntary vs. 1200 calories involuntary

A friend of mine died in his sleep. He was about 32 years old and weighed
about 50 pounds more than I did.

You obviously know a lot about how to diet. Perhaps you just need to
    address portion control.

    Good luck.

  7. You can top post any damn time you feel like it Carmen. I hope it is
uneventful too as my whole inheritance will be gone if this turns out
catastrophic. Strange thing is... Gram was insistant on paying for this
surgery for me when she was alive and I was hesitant as it really is a
dramatic step to be taken. The Gram died and she is paying for it
afterall. I am 12 times more likely to die obese before the age of 60.
Sometimes I would rather be dead than fat. I appreciate your best
wishes. Remember when Larrys mom died. We all sat at her bedside and
saw what diabetes, obesity and undiagnosed sleep apnea can do to a
person. His sister decided right then she wasnt going down like that.
The same doc did her surgery right after Mom died and she went from 303
to 185 in 12 months. She looks great. I belong to a newsgroup with 223
people who have all had the same surgery done by the same exact doctor.
I have done my homework and this is not an uninformed decision. He is
good at what he does. He doesnt do it to make big money he does it to
help people. Due to the fact we dont have insurance and medicare
issues I kinda get preferencial treatment and I am for getting this
done and overwith. I'm incredibly anxious about the whole thing but the
support is wonderful. There are 8 people who have promised to check in
one me in the hospital personally. Cool Huh???
    Laureen

  8. The first three months is 300 to 600 cals a day max, after the 3 months
and when your pouch is more mature you can do 800 to 1000 max. As soon
as my belly heals I will be walking and doing Curves again as long as
    my kneee allows.

  9. I wish you luck, Laureen. I know you must be desperate to take such a
drastic step. I would never do it myself but none of us walks in another's
shoes. I'm sure that the helpful people will continue to welcome you. As
for some others, they don't welcome anybody so it doesn't much matter what
    you do.

  10. Because I low carb and keep my sugars down. Im generally 136 in the
morning and suffer the dawn phenomenan. As soon as I eat something my
sugar goes down. I truly am faithful at limiting my carb intake. I run
80 to 110 all day. I eat and spike a few points. I flunk a glucose
tolerance test real well and my fasting blood sugars come back from the
docs in mid 130's. He wanted me to do another glucose tolerance the
other day to see what my sugars are 2 hours post consumption. I said
what for? They make me puke my sugar gets so high, I feel terrible and
have to lay down in a room while I wait for the last blood draw. My GP
told me my diabtes is very early stage and the surgeon told me in 3
months I wont have a BS problem ever again. All my complaints and
problems will vanish with the fat. KEWL HUH??? There is a price to pay
here but I have paid a grand price packing the football team around on
my back so, a few weeks of misery and a life of deprivation is worth
being thinner and healthier. Im not out to get skinny. I want to see
    200 pounds.
    Laureen

  11. Thats how I am thinking. Miserable with no light at the end of the
tunnel 5' 2" 400 pounds trouble getting around missing out on life.
Have a few bad weeks, see light at the end of the tunnel, lose weight
get around better. When I weight it all out surgery is my option. My
depression lifted when I made the resolve to see the surgeon. This is
not like I am 250 pounds and need to drop 110 pounds. This is like 400
pounds and will be happy at 200. If I was lazy dirty schlep and sat in
front of the tv eating bon bons I would say this was the lazy mans way
out but............... I am a productive human who watches what they
eat with little to no reward for their diligance. I take my shower
everyday and it is a struggle, I keep an impeccible home but it is a
struggle and it hurts. I run errands and loathe walking into store
because it hurts. Things HAVE to change!!! Laureen

  12. laureen,
i will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
YES, you are welcome here......................before AND after your
    surgery.
    your experience will benefit others!

  14. Thank you all!!! I thought I was going to be lectured. No one can know
another hell unitl they live it. I just got a nice note from a local
girl who is in a newsgroup I joined and she will be coming to see me.
This made me bawl my eyes out... read on.........Hi Laureen,

I know it's winter, but I thought you could use a big bouquet of
sunflowers. I know you're scared, but honestly, you are in the very
best, most competent hands there are. He did my surgery 16 plus weeks
ago, and I would do it again, with him, in a heartbeat. He told me to
give him my life for three months and he would guarantee success. I
did and so far, I haven't been able to make him a liar! You will come
out of this just fine, albeit a little sore, but fine. :-)

For the hospital, I brought a book, my own jammies and slippers,
shampoo and soap. Didn't use any of it. I just used what they gave
me! Do wear or bring a loose dress to wear home. Your staples will
make wearing pants and bras uncomfortable for a while. I did use my
Carmex (or ChapStik). This was very helpful for the first two days
when you will not be allowed to drink ANYTHING. On Wednesday, Dr. S
will let you start having 1 ounce of water every hour for the first six
hours. Picture a medicine cup that your kids use for Tylenol. That's
it! Trust me though, it is nectar of the Gods! After six hours he'll
let you have 2 ounces!! Woo Hoo! Once you get home, have some SF
Popsicles and SF Jell-O on hand and made up. I tried the canned
chicken broth......YUK! If you can, make and freeze your own. Fruit
    2O was good too.

Relax Laureen. I know it's easier said than done, but I do mean savor
these last few days of the 'old Laureen.' When you get to the hospital
and they weigh you, I didn't want to look, but Cyndee told me, 'Look at
that weight and remember it because you will NEVER SEE IT AGAIN.' She
was right! :-D So what I'm saying is enjoy these last couple of days,
as you will never be the same person again.........only better!

Lori and I will be to see you on Tuesday. I know you said come on up
Monday, but you will be hurting a bit. The first time up from the bed
to use the bathroom is a bit intense, but it gets a lot better after
that. We'll be there around 3:30. Maybe stroll the lovely halls of
Overlake floor number four! I'll bring a couple of picture of me. One
from about two months before my surgery and one from a year ago at my
heaviest. I'm a statuesque 5'4" and at my heaviest carried 353 pounds.
I've already, in four months, 'lost my son!' This will change your
life girl. As the license plate surround say's, 'Get in, sit down,
shut up, and HOLD ON' You are in for the best ride of your life!
    Pat :-D

  15. Good luck, Laureen.
