If Boonen retired before the stage started, how come Hushovd didn't
take his green jersey? Did he choose not to?

In cycling it is considered bad form to ride in the jersey of a
competitor. Credit Agricole would be [censored] if Hushovd rode the stage
in a Quick.Step jersey.
Maybe Ulrich could swipe Lance's jersey rather than race for it.
T-Mobile would be angry but at least Ulrich would be in yellow.

I can't tell if that's a tongue in cheek reply...or complete dumbass.
You don't ride in a leader's jersey if you gain it because of
"misfortune". Lance didn't want to wear the yellow after DZ crashed in
the TTT since he really gained yellow for that reason.

Dumbass, Lance was forced to wear the yellow jersey anyway. The
question
is why the commissaires changed their application of rules since then.

At the start of today's stage, Boonen had the most points and was the
holder of the green jersey. The jersey is awarded at the conclusion of
each stage - it cannot change hands before a stage. So Hushovd was not
entitled to the jersey until he completed today's stage.

It was serious. Boonen only decided not to start on the morning of the
race. It was probably official at the time of sign-in. There was no green
jersey ready for Hushovd.

But he had gained it in that stage. Until the start this morning Boonen was
still leading on points.

The simple answer is that they didn't have time to make one up. Boonen was
presented the green the day before and the organization didn't have a green
team jersey "in case" Boonen didn't start for Thor.

The Lance and Boonen situations are slightly different. DZ's team lost
to Discovery in the TTT and had DZ finished with the rest of CSC he
would have lost Yellow. Not getting into the argument that CSC would or
would not have finished with the same time had DZ not crashed.
Boonen's decision not to start came at a time when it was too late to
get Thor's green jersey to him.
Lance had earned Yellow by finishing ahead of CSC the day before. Thor
acquired the green jersey when the points leader dropped out. If Boonen
had started and then dropped the race committee wouldn't have pulled
Thor over and made him wear the green jersey.

Thanks for the explanation.

As I said, "didn't _want_ to wear yellow". Come on now Ilan, I know
you pay more attention than that...
You're making some unfounded assumptions. CSC may or may not have lost
the yellow if DZ doesn't crash.
I've seen them make the leader's jerseys. Some guy in a van has a pile
of the blank jersey's with a bunch of team screens. I think it takes
roughly 5 seconds to print the thing. I get the impression that time
wasn't the issue - it was a show of respect, just as Lance (and many
others in the past) have done.
That explanation might make sense, but I get the impression that the
sponsors (and therefore the tour organizers) want their jersey out
there on _somebody_ each day, no matter what.

No. It was Boonen's jersey until he lost it. He didn't lose it until the
end of today's stage, because at the beginning of the stage he still led the
field, even if he didn't start.

Please re-read the post and note that I said:

You should also realize that the jersey machine is used for the end of
the stage when the jersey winner is known. That means that in the
morning the jersey printer is off at the finish. And also note that the
jersies they dole out on the podium are long-sleeved with the zipper in
the back. Not the jersey the rider actually wears the next day.
I got the impression that time was the issue.

You might be right but I think that I remember similar situations when the
current holder retired after winning and the new guy starting the stage.
Research awaits.

Acording to the Norwegian newspaper ÐAftenpostenð Boonen handed over the
green jersey to Hushovd the night before the race as a gift. But Thor
didn´t want to wear it out of respect for Boonen
Aftenposten says that Thor and Tom are good friends and that Thor last
night got an txt-message from Boonen whishing him all the best...

I'm sorry if this destroys a nice discussion, but Hushovd said on
Norwegian TV that it was out of respect for Boonen.

Thor could not wear the jersey that Boonen gave him. It had Boonen's team
logos.
