Brian Link said:I was reading "Flex" magazine (yes, I know - but occasionally they
have some interesting training ideas) and they were talking about a
new guideline in bodybuilding judging that calls for "aesthetically
pleasing" bodies. Then the magazine proceeded to interview various
bodybuilders asking for their reaction. Lots of them mentioned Synthol
(which I'm assuming is some sort of steroid) and Ron Coleman (lots of
pictures of Ron's big stomach) as well as other bodybuilders with
notoriously large abdomens.
So what's the connection between Synthol and bellies?
There is none. Do a google search on synthol and you will see it's not a
steroid or related to the big gut syndrome.

bodybuilders associate big guts with Synthol?
But they don't.

Just curious. Thanks

Thanks Will. I love how you guys on this forum continually put me in
my place, but do so while passing on useful info nonetheless.
The article is titled "Gut Reaction", and it's about the IFBB's new
"aesthetics" dictum. The heading asks
"Does this move put the reign of Ronnie Colemen, often criticized for
his protruding abdomen, in Peril?"
Then they poll a bunch of bodybuilding champs. Coleman answers:
"I only know it wasn't directed at me, but it'll be pretty bad for
guys like Jay Cutler and Gunter Schlierkamp... ...If they're talking
about Synthol and bloated stomachs, that has nothing to do with me"
Abby Chappy says:
"What have the judges been doing for the last ten years? They've been
rewarding physiques that are bumpy and lumpy, with obvious Synthol use
and bellies out to here"
Greg Kovacs' quote is:
"This will be better for the sport, but I don't think it will
rearrange the Mr. Olympia placings. Ronnie is a freak, but he's still
symmetrical... ...As for Synthol, they should shoot whoever created
that stuff"
So, it's those quotes that made me think there was some assumed
connection between Synthol and big bellies. As you correctly pegged,
I'd never heard of Synthol before, but just had a passing interest on
what it might have to do with protruding abdomens. Googling informs me
that it's some whacked-out lubricant that causes muscle inflammation
(correct me if I'm wrong.. which I know you will).
As far as Flex magazine - ya sure I realize it's a tabloid - but there
was a great article explaining some supplements' usefulness this
month, and I actually get inspired by some of the champs' advice.
I went to the gym tonight and was hitting a sticking point with my
dumbbell bench. I thought about the tenor of some of the advice I've
read - which said to go the extra mile, basically, and was able to
push myself beyond laziness to completing my set. I don't want to look
like the juiced and/or genetically gifted centerfolds in that mag, but
I do aspire to shedding the flab and moving as much as possible to a
"V" torso.
Someday I may be an actual powerlifter or bodybuilder - but as an
average joe with an interest in lifting weights, I'll take whatever
inspiration I can get.
Thanks again Will for your input.
