Nice Kate, very nice. My bikes keep me sane as well. I treat them badly (bend wheels, seatpost, scratches, ride them in mud, in the rain, jump off things on them, etc) yet everytime I call on them they are there. I can imagine them wagging their "tail" when I walk into the garage and grab my bag and helmet. Only on my bike can I revert back to age 10 and not have everyone in the world look at me like I am completely loony! Woooo-haaa!!! That and scabs look cool to my nieces and their friends! Keep the rubber side down.

My reasons for cycling have changed over the years. Years ago I rode because it got me to work without having to pay busfare.
Now, my bike has been a mind saver for me. My husband moved us to the burbs, and it is so BORING and mindnumbing out here, that I see my bike as my only way of escaping this place. It has become an extension of my body because I need it to stay sane and ride the hell out of this godforsaken place.

Feeling of freedom, movement and speed.
For fitness, strength and general health (both physical & mental).
To race and to commute.
To avoid contributing greenhouse gases.
For the friends I have made through cycling. -

Enjoy listening to the news or music as I pedal for hours and hours alone. The feeling I get when I hunt down week-end warriors and drop their weak arses with fancy expensive bikes. The looks on the faces of females when I keep up with their cars in traffic. The anger release when some [censored] cuts me off or does something else stupid and I crack their car window with a frozen waterbottle or one of the rocks I carry.
Most of all, the memories I had from my youth when I was almost pro. This drives me to try to almost get to this level again......

ditto on the sanity thing!!!

I had a "deep thought" about this question the other day when I was flying down the ridge of Mt. Tam just north of San Francisco after sweating out the 2000 ft. climb up and I thought - biking is like life because they're both all about learning to overcome resistance.

I ride for the same reason I became a Marine when I was 18...IT'S IN MY BLOOD! Went out for a short ride with my daughter today, and considered going back out after I dropped her off, but didn't. Sitting here now thinking I might just pedal the 8 mile round trip to my buddy's house...I wake up in the morning thinking about what I am going to do on my ride today.
ADDICTED!

I let my dog out of the car on the long drive through Canada on the Alcan on my way to Alaska. He was only about 3 months old, still a pup. I walked over to the small lake, and there were a bunch of ducks in the middle. I didn't have to tell him anything. He'd never seen a lake or ducks before. He started swimming, yellow labrador duck dog that he was.
So why do I ride? I think my dog put it best. He wouldn't have been able to tell you why he swam after those ducks either. It's just his nature.

What a great tale.
I ride because I'm so full of anger, that riding for hours help to exhaust me. Then at times, gives me a reason to fight. Love hitting ignorant drivers. The look on the face of the stupid women I punched thru her open car window was priceless. Teaches her for not knowing how to drive......

Memphmann - you are one angry dude. And why your problem with weekend warriors on fancy bikes? Hasn't everyone got their own perfectly valid reasons for wanting to get out on their bikes?? Why should we have to get all tribal about it and look down on those whose motivations and/or situation isn't the same as ours?
I'm a weekend warrior in the main but that doesn't stop me from getting a thrill out of pushing myself to go that bit quicker and that rush of freedom when my legs feel good and I am (relatively) flying along. And also in my case when that PB is broken on the bike split of a triathlon.

Yes I am one angry dude. Makes me ride faster. I can also admit that alot of my hating of "week-end warriors" is envy. Catching these ppl on expensive bikes, and knowing that they are trying so hard to stick to my wheel. Makes me wonder wh they have these bikes and are so weak. Soon I shall have a better bike, well maybe...

Anger can actually be a very powerful tool and motivator if channeled properly since it is one of the strongest emotions. Some of my best accomplishments were motivated by someone telling me what I couldn't accomplish. I don't go through life angry though. I've learned to sort of turn it on and off when needed and am generally considered a happy person if not a bit "intense" (or so I'm told).

Sad part is my normal transportation was cheaper then the bike. A month bus pass is 58.00 in the last two days I had to buy two new tires (wore the back down to fabric in about 600 miles) then the chain jumped of the last cog and chewed up the spokes. 85.00 for a new rim (better) and a rebuilt wheel.
Then all the clothes I needed and the accessories it will be awhile before it is cheaper (G)
