  1. Hi All,

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I am only 5'5 and weigh in at 338 lbs.
    and have type 2 diabetes.

I started low-carbing this week (I'm only on day 6 right now) and everyone I
speak to is trying to discourage me from doing so!

Just about every one says that's it's dangerous for me to do this 🙁

It's really bringing me down......but surely this latest low-carb craze
hitting North-America certainly must be an indicator that a good portion of
the population believes that a low-carb life style is healthy and OK to do?

Any comments to lift my spirits would be appreciated.

    Eddie,

You knkow, it's the funniest thing, the people who are the most skeptical,
are the ones who know the least about the diet. (Or so it seems to me.)
It's alwaus "but a pound of bacon???" or "you're going to have kidney
failure!". I look at this a couple of ways. First, I have NEVER eaten a
pound of bacon. Secondly, from reading the book, and hearing other people's
testimonies, I have never seen anyone with kidney problems. People make up
what they want, especially when they lack the knowledge.

    Otherwise, good luck!

    Ken.

Study and educate yourself. You will soon be able to counter the nonsense
that people will spew in your direction. Moreover, once you start dropping
the pounds, looking better and feeling better, and getting of any meds, they
will realize what nonsense they were full of.

Peoople tend to malign many things they don't understand.

People tend to hate things that force a change of belief onto them.

This isn't limited to "stupid" people, and even the relatively educated
may have to work a little or a lot to avoid automatic rejections and
automatic negative reactions to things that are somewhat different.

Many have been brainwashed into "Cholesterol Will Kill YOu---- Don't you
    dare eat it".

Many others have been brainwashed by "FAT is BAD for you".

    Atkins goes against this brainwashing.

Atkins will therefore generate disgusting negative reactions amongst the
    brainwashed.

IT is perhaps better to change friends than to waste time trying to
    educate them.

These people are reacting to protect their beliefs, not to really do you
    any good.

But, they will deny this, of course.

  8. Eddie,

I just went to a reunion of some people I have known since back in the
1970s. Two women there who had been fat the entire time I knew them looked
spectacular. I asked what happened, and the answer from both was "low carb."
One of these women had never been able to lose any weight ever before, not
    even in a yo-yo mode.

There has been a huge amount of poor science cited to claim that low carbing
is dangerous. None of it has held up to the new onslaught of research
published over the past 3 years. Well-conducted research shows low carbing
improves cardiovascular risk factors and controls diabetic blood sugars
    better than any drug.

Unfortunately, some of the resistance is from organizations like the
American Diabetes Association, and the American Dietetic Association who
have been giving out dangerously flawed diet information for a generation.
If they admit their recommended diets have been worsening disease all this
time, they are in huge trouble to say nothing of potential lawsuits.

There's also been a slew of news articles from a vegetarian front
organization whose doctors make exaggerated claims about the harmful effects
of the diet. Papers and TV stations do not do the research needed to see if
what these doctors claim is true. It is not.

You can read the research studies that back low carbing's healthfulness
    yourself at http://www.lowcarbresearch.org/lcr/lce_results.asp There is
some new stuff that hadn't made it onto her page last time I checked too.

    Why is low-carb being attacked?

Low carb goes counter to the current science. Just try to get a
scientist with an advanced degree to admit that they are wrong their
    entire careers.

Kellogg's, et al, will lose billions on their refined grain products.

Pharmaceutical companies will lose billions on drug sales with a
    healthier population.

Coke, Pepsi, etc stand to lose more billions.

Sugar is cheap and food manufacturere will lose a lot of business if
people start paying attention to sugar content of foods. The sugar
industry has made billions since the 70's and the introduction of
    cheap high-fructose corn syrup.

Food industry and pharma industry pretty much own most universities
(thru massive grants) and can get them to say pretty much anything
they want them to say. It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of all
research in the US is industry funded.

The American Diabetes Assoc., The heart and stroke association, and
most major "non-profits" like these have accepted millions in
sponsorship from pharma and food industry. They will never have
anything good to say about low-carb regardless of the real health
benefits. You can check this out by going to their websites and
finding their corporate sponsorship page. Most US non-profits are
surprisingly up front about their corporate sponsorship. In Canada and
the UK, they tend to not show this info. Obviously in Canada and the
UK the populations are a bit more sensitive and has a better
    understanding of conflict of interests.

Oh yeah, then we have the PETA, the anti-animal-eating crowd that uses
their sister organisation, the Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine, to push their vegan agenda. They pretend to have science
behind them and some people believe it because of their
official-sounding name. All they are is domestic animal-rights
    terrorists.

Just a few of the reasons.

First of all, welcome, future former fat guy, from an almost former fat
    guy ;-)

Your two greatest weapons are 1) knowledge and 2) a fanatical devotion to
    your health.

Read up and learn to uses phrases like "Research indicates otherwise.
Which studies are you referring to?" I find this really helps shut up the
people who just have fourth- and fifth-hand information and have swallowed
    others' predigested opinions.

Furthermore, as you read, you'll find that Atkins LC isn't "this latest
low-carb craze". His diet has been around since the 70s. And others go
back into the previous century. It's only recently been coming into the
general consciousness, largely AS A RESULT OF RESEARCH that came out
confirming its benefits. The lastest flurry of attention began with a
story that 'broke' in the New York Times and has been gathering steam ever
since as more research has come out and companies suddenly discover a
    profitable market segment.

Carb control for diabetes is pretty much a no-brainer. No doubt your
doctor has told you as much. Use this with the naysayers. This isn't
really something they can argue with.

Finally, in the words of Harlan Ellison, "Not everyone is entitled to an
opinion. They are only entitled to an informed opinion." If you were
taking up stamp-collecting because you thought it was fun and you had a
lot of people who know nothing about stamps or collecting tell you that it
was a boring hobby and a waste of money, would you listen to them? Of
    course not.

Good luck, and hang in there.

enough people in the world already.

  19. You have found the diet that's right for you. You don't even need to tell your
friends that you're eating low carb, just tell them that you're giving up sugar
and you've decided to replace all your pasta/rice/cakes/pies/bread/potatoes in
your diet with GREEN LEAFY vegetables because you want to up your vitamins
intake. Invent a strange hate towards carrots, eat only a little bit of
tomatoes and then you're sorted. When you're couple dozens of pounds off, then
come clean and tell your friends the truth. I understand that introducing new
changes in your diet and lifestyle takes lots of learning and concentration,
which is why I recommend that you hide the fact that you're low carbing so that
you can better direct your energy into adopting the changes rather than waste in
    on explaining/debating/defending your diet.

  20. I disagree with that. It's likely that these people are genuinely
    concerned, but they're just ignorant.
