If they tried the “all knowing”, self-righteous act over here they would
get told off in short order, since there is no moderator to protect them.

I do remember that Ol' Cli..., er Cletus Lee would often complain about
not having his way, and then threaten to leave the newsgroup.

It seems like everything on line has its plusses and minuses. IHPVA
was constantly screaming about OTs and cutting off very good
discussions.

BROL is great but it is slower than molasses on my computer with a
lousy phone line. It kept changing fomats, adding ads that take 15
minutes before I could scroll, or demanding pictures: so after the last
change; I came back.

I can tolerate that juvenile [censored] or listen to a know-it-all, but after
a few months away; ARBR was unorganized, yet organized enough to
tolerate WAY over the moderated ones (Power assist especially!); so OUT
with all other groups except ARBR.

Alll I can do is think "this too will pass".
Then an enjoyable X-maspoem appears and I know why I stayed.

Imagine, if you will, a group of people sitting around talking about
things of mutual interst, in this case, recumbents. Now imagine some
idiot walking in to the middle of this group and saying something like,
"Hey all you fat old geezers, I'm Johnny the Idiot and I'm much better
than you b/c I ride the coolest bike in the universe".
Needless to say, this guy would get his ass kicked. The usernet
provides him with a place to hide.... until someone gets [censored]
enough to do something about it.

Leif, I can't speak to the Monkey Island [censored] heads as it is beyond my
reckoning, but as for the regulars here on ARBR I can assure you it has
nothing to do with cowardice. Of course, we would not act the same in real
life as we do on a newsgroup. Good Grief! That is a given. Usenet frees us
to say things about how we really think without first establishing a
foundation of friendship, which normally takes many years to do.

Varney says we should write as though we are writing to family, but that
would be no fun at all. No, I prefer to write to strangers where I can say
exactly what is on my mind and let the chips fall where they may. That is
the whole point of Usenet. If you want to write as though you were writing
to family, then for heaven's sake do so. But Usenet is not family. It is the
larger world and it is totally different.

A war of words is as real as any other war, but it is important to keep it
strictly a war of words. Anyone who can't do that should not be on Usenet in
the first place.

Robert, you are welcome to BROL. The fact is I do not like any forum type
bulletin boards. It is like watching grass grow. It seems to defeat the very
purpose of having a newsreader and the quickness of Usenet. It is for
sluggards and dullards. No thank you! I will stick with ARBR and proper
Usenet newsgroups even if as you say they can get a bit indecent at times.

Usenet I consider a miracle. Bulletin board type forums belong to another
age. Mr. Sherman is 100% right about Usenet freeing us to say things that we
would otherwise never be permitted to say - and we are saying it to the
world. Like I said, Usenet is a g.d. miracle. Frankly, I do not want to even
discuss any of this with those who are unable to appreciate what science and
technology has wrought.
