I love the stuff! Home-brew, restaurants, gas stations, Starbucks, local coffee houses, even
Dunkin Donuts.
I drink it before I ride, during my ride, after my ride, before I race, all the time! I take it
in the morning, midday, evening, even with dessert.
Can this be good? Is there a risk to riding with so much caffeine in my blood? I race citizens
and 5's, so I don't think I'll ever be tested at one of those events.
Does anybody here feel the same about the stuff?
Thanks, Ronde Chumpion
There are lots of studies decrying the evils of coffee, but most of them were paid for by herbal
tea manufacturers. As far as I can tell, the worst thing about coffee is that when they convince
you it's unhealthy, you're likely to withdraw suddenly, leading to a couple of weeks of ghastly
headaches. From personal experience, I think you do build up a tolerance, and changing your
caffiene intake suddenly is more likely to have unpleasant side effects than keeping your intake
stable. Coffee does have diuretic effects, so I would guess there is a somewhat increased chance
of dehydration, esp. on long hot rides.
