PS forgot to factor in cost of tool to undo the HG lockring, and the
pigging chain whip... hopefully I'll split that money over many, many
years of service...

Yes. I rejoin all my OEM Shimano chains with them.
But when you come to replace your chain go for a Sram, they come with
powerlinks when new. When you then replace that chain put the old powerlink
in your bike bag, if you or someone you're with then breaks a chain you can
remove the damaged link and repair with the old powerlink. Easier, more
reliable and means your chain maintains its original length.

Yes, but be sure you specify one with the magic link - not all SRAM
chains have them (although possibly all SRAM 9-speed chains do). The
SRAM magic links are the business.
