This is far more complicated than you think. First, Lance has a great sprint and could house a lot a
riders out there. Clearly, though, he's not the rider he was prior to cancer. Note the differences
in Lance as a rider pre and post cancer, along with his training. In short, Lance has evolved into
an ultracomplete rider. Unfortunately he has sacrifice his sprint to do so. WHY?
That improved climbing and TT ability likely stems from his development of his Type I and Type II
mucles fibers more towards the endunace end of the spectrum. There are likely some other physiologic
changes to explain this as well, but the bottom line is Lance has lost some of his sprint but gain a
huge amount of "endurance" power. To say he sucks in a sprint though, you need to consider the event
and the motivation.
If anyone recalls, Indurain was not known for his sprint, but he beat one of the top sprinters in
the World (Ludwig) at the World Championships. Also recall Mr. Bugno edging Jalabert (pre-crash and
pre-super stud) in the '92 worlds. Ah, then there's Kelly. The '89 worlds came down to a sprint and
Lemond housed everyone! Clearly Kelly had evolved into a more complete rider, but Lemond had a
pretty vicious sprint at times.
Also remember that sprinting at the end of a stage 2 weeks into the Tour is different than a one 265
km RR. So sprinting is more complicated than one would think.

walking with a cane along the course toward a WC. Amazing thing was the old man passed Armstrong,
had time to use the WC and return to view the finish.
Really though, have you ever seen such a slug when it comes to sprinting? Geez!
Has he ever raced or trained on the track? Has Carmichael ever tried to fix this problem?
