"Although this was described as a study of "semistarvation," it is
important to keep in mind that cutting the men's rations to half of
their former intake is precisely the level of caloric deficit used to
define "conservative" treatments for obesity (Stunkard, 1993)."
    A real eye opener.

Egad! Remind me not to follow that diet. Did you see that some of the
men ate 8-10,000 calories per day during weekends?

Uhmm.. I was more disturbed by the man who chopped off three fingers
because of the emotional disturbances he developed. The diet was
simply 50% calorie reduction--which the author says is close to what
is prescribed to obese patients. I don't know if that is true, however
when I first started I was eating at a 6-7x multiplier (60%-70%) once
the cravings died off. I wasn't trying to limit them, they just worked
    out to that average.

I didn't read that part -- I only skimmed the article.

Let's see. Restrict your calories and you will chop off three
    fingers.

Hmmmm. This guy gets my wacko designation. He has done the
poorest job of scientific research I've seen in quite some time.
    What a hack!

If truth is an objective at all in your life, please follow up on
the research coming out of this 2004 conference:
    http://calorierestriction.org/CR_Conference_2004.html

If you do, you are going to see some of the most exciting and
rewarding research in the history of 'dieting'.

I think someone cutting off their fingers is a lot more exciting than
    calorie restriction.

Yes, but that's why they make those magazines you see in checkout
    lines.

I notice that all those survivors in wwII concentration camps all had
    chopped off three fingers. NOT!!!

Just wondering... did you read it or was this a Laz-a-boy judgement?

The author did not do the clinical study nor was the study about
"dieting". The study was done in the 1950s to understand the effects
of semi-starvation on human beings. The subjects, 36 of them developed
obsessions with food, binging and purging, disgust at themselves for
their behaviors, and a few of them developed mental disturbances over
the 3 month period. All of them rated well on the MMPI scales prior to
the study. One of them, obviously, suffered a severe mental breakdown.
Imagine that study being conducted now--the lawsuits that would
follow! The results showed anorexic and bulemic patterns arose out of
semi-starvation and deprivation of food. The effects lasted 3-6 months
after they returned to normal access to food. Interestingly, almost
everyone gained about 10% more weight afterwards, but then shed the
extra weight to return to their starting weight. They did not plump up
to a new permanent high as is conversationally assumed.

    Definitely some interesting stuff
