  1. The rubber/materials is a few pennies per pound, the indentured slave
labor/child labor is also a penny at most per pair of sneakers (you
should see these kids push out shoes ever hour on hidden camera) and
final product cost shipped is probably 1 or 2 dollars a pair yet they
sell these this at prices close to the price of italian leather mens
shoe made in italy (and some get there). No one would pay 50 dollars
for a book of matches yet people seem to have no problem spending
120-200+ for 2 dollar shoes. Forget it I will stick to good Italian
made shoes if I plan on spending 100-200 for footwear and If I am going
to be buying slavelabor sneakers I can get them atleast for 10-15
dollars (non nikes) that are made in the same plant. (

Why are they so expensive? Because they can. People continue to buy
them at high prices, not for functional value, but because of marketing
hype. For every person that is turned off by Nike's tactics, thousands
more will be sold by those same tactics.

Where do you people find $200 Nikes? At my local Sports Authority, Nikes range
from $50-$110, just like all the other running shoes.

new balance shops are made in the usa and say so
very BOLDLY on the back. beats me as to the difference.

I buy my shoes directly from the NB store on Yonge. I have

Just like Microsoft, it's fun to hate the big guy. I will admit that
Knight is a lot like Gates with his unscrupulous marketing but that's a
different story. The four year old works for a few hours on Nikes then
    does Asics, etc.

Anyone real hung up on this can go order Bart Hersey shoes and quit your
pissing and moaning. Don't bother Flabby you love to hate.

Stick the Italian shoes up your ass and keep running that quarter mile
with your $15 sneakers because that's all you are worth anyway.

Yeah, the "imported materials" are probably the outsole, and everything
    else.

They still have a couple of lines that are made in the US (whatever that
means) but most of them are made in China. The made in the US models are
    fairly pricy.

Good luck trying to find a decent trainer for $2. Most brands, like Nike,
sell their low-end, made in China shoes, for about $80.

You're making things up. Their most expensive gimmicky shoe is about $150
(one of those shox things). Most of their trainers are in the $80-$120 range
(like most other brands). Some of their flats are cheaper.

and where can I get some ?

The model I wear _is_ pricy. But I don't care.
I wear them because they're the best shoe for me

Sounds like a good reason to me. I always go for mid-low end models, but that's
because I find these better for me. I agree that you'll probably get more out
of a high end NB model than one of the low end trainers.

    Cheers,

I wear NB because I have a EEE foot and they are the only ones that fit
    my feet with any consistency.

Textiles, shoes, clothing manufacturing goes to wear the cheapest labor
is. I remember in the 80's when all the shoes were Made in Korea. The
Korean shoe industry went bust when all the manufacturing went to
Indonesia, China, et al. No matter, now the Koreans make cars and
microchips. I just read that the Chinese are getting to export their
first cars to the US. That's the path of development: start with the
easy stuff first until you reach full employment, then move up the food
    chain as your economy matures.

The slam against Nike is stupid: don't buy Nike shoes, so...what? So
the workers can go make $.25/hr at a local manufacturer or sweating on a
palm tree plantation, instead of $.50/hr at a Nike sub-contractor?

I buy all of my running shoes at factory Outlets. (Although Nike is
still the most expensive at the outlet mall) I go with Adidas I like
the fit and feel. Plus they are way less. The shoes are in no way
inferior. They may be an older model, or the colors of the shoe did not
sell. I bought a pair of Marathon trainers the other day for 22 dollars.
I like these for Fartlek on the trails. The reason they were cheap was
because they were sky blue , instead of royal blue. I am using them on
the trails so they will be darker soon. If you do not care about the
color or if it is the most recent shoe, then by all means try a factory
outlet. You can also get some great deals on technical running wear
    there also.

  20. Looking at my $80 Asic Gel, I see 16 pieces in the out sole,
and 12 in the uppers. I presume there are several other pieces
inside the sole, including the gel pod. It probably takes
at least an hour of labor to assemble this.
The $20 shoes will have three pieces- outer sole, inner sole,
and upper. The extra sole pieces are useful for stability.
Some of the extra upper pieces are for durability while others
    are for decoration.
