I always thought what separated cycling from other sports are the
descents. I stopped watching the OLN coverage, because I had to endure the
"stupid" euro culture on the side of the road as the riders ascend. The
devil, the angel, yawn. Then comes the descent, a brief glimpse at the
speed, and off to a series of ads. Is it that the motorcyle camera men lack
the courage to capture the descents, or is it that the motorcycles are not
allowed to ride along descending riders?

In the '03 and '05 Giro's, there was extensive coverage of Paolo Salvodelli
(Il Falco) and his descending skills. Those skills helped him win both of
those races. In the '04 TdF, there was live coverage of the descent in which Beloki
crashed and Lance rode across a field. In an earlier TdF (can't recall
which one), there was live coverage of the descent in which Ullrich went off
the road and over the bars as his bike flipped up in the air.I love going downhill fast myself, and appreciate the coverage that they
have. Presumably, they don't feature as much coverage as the climbing,
because: 1) it's not always safe for the camera motos to be in with the
riders, and 2) they don't spend very much overall time descending.GG

Sometimes it's pretty tough to get into a position that's safe and is
not going to interfere with the riders on a serious descent, and that's
with me not having to worry about carrying a camera. I think all of us
officials on motors really start looking over the field on the way up
to get an idea who's there and what it's going to look like once people
start going over the top. It's something you need to plan for and try
to anticipate what's going to happen so you can put yourself in the
right place. It really helps if you have had a couple of stages, or
other races recently with these riders so you have a good idea about
form they are in and what to watch for.

They're covered, it's just that your TV provider decided to cut it out.
On French public TV they just started having commercials, about 4
per stage and 20 seconds each.-ilan

riders in the group. I don't recall anything but aerial shots when there is a
large group descending. I don't recall who it was, but I recall watching the
moto following a rider down a wet descent. The rider went down and the moto
almost ran into him. You have to admire the skills of both the moto driver and
the camera man.

That's when I zap across to RTBF Belgian TV and their ads don't coincide
(if I go to Eurosport there always seem to be ads...)
All the best

PS France 2 is showing the whole stage tomorrow! -

Thats Savoldelli's twin (its considered fashionable to have a twin in pro
ranks these days).
