Probably because they think non-cyclists should stay off the cycle path/lane. No exceptions even for ladies 50+.

They are thinking like motorists. They probably are motorists. If a motorist did the same (or hooted, or shouted something indecipherable as they shot past) you perhaps would think it normal, or rude or aggressive, but "cheeky". I think the choice of word says something about your view of the road pecking order.

OK, I'll bite - was it a cycle lane or a mixed use path? If the former, and peds were loitering in it, I'd get upset too.... So were you and the young ladies on bikes or not? If on bikes then yes, he was 'cheeky', but holding up faster riders isn't too clever either, IMHO.

Every bike path I've seen (4 countries, possibly 5) eventually becomes a mixed use path; if not officially, then de facto. It's one of the main reasons I dislike bike paths.
There are [stupid/selfish/rude/inconsiderate] people everywhere, not just on bikes. There are also [smart/giving/polite/considerate] people everywhere, including on bikes.

Indeed, pedestrians have a right to be annoyed at cyclists on pavements, so they should realise cyclists can feel the same about pedestrians on dedicated cycle paths.
The other day I rang my bell to warn 4 line-a-breast pedestrians as I passed them (on the grass) on a dedicate cycle path and one shouted "[censored] off...you cyclist shouldn't ride on pavements!".

You didn't bother to say whether it was a mixed use path, or a segregated one.
If it was a mixed use one then the only person being rude was the cyclist; who should have slowed down, announced his presence and passed when it was safe to do so.
If it was a segregated one then it is precisely the same for the cyclist. However, the two women were also being rude by not occupying the bit intended for pedestrians. That does not excuse the rudeness of the cyclist though.

Yeah, I''ve had that, it's funny really: I carefully and slowly passed a woman on the cycle side of a shared-use facility, made no comment, and she shouted at me for being on the pavement. This particular path is also used as a drop-off point for shoppers, the car stops on the road and the passengers de-bus on to the cyclepath, relying on the open car door to protect them from bikes at up to 30mph hitting them.

Such things are very rare. However, even being a "dedicated" cycle path does not mean that pedestrians can't use it, just like pedestrians can use roads.

I often find that pedestrians walk on the road itself (particularly little narrow side-roads) when there is a perfectly good pavement for them. (Especially near Barts hospital)
