  4. Steel cut oatmeal is supposed to be the best. Crunchier, too. My tin
says "John McCann's Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal." A 1/4 cup dry has 26
carbs with 4 g of dietary fiber. I got it at a major supermarket in the
    foreign and gourmet foods section.

22g of effective carbs per 1/4 cup is not low... Rolled Oats and
Quick Oats are around 10g per 1/4 cup.

Are those just plain oats? The cooking time and the advice to
run thru a food processor seems to indicate that they are whole oats

like the kind I feed my horse.

The sort that you feed to horses probably has more of the chaff
left on than what you'll find in the can. Also the name "steel
cut" is meaningfull. The grains have been cut into smaller
    pieces. Mostly half-grains.

So they are "whole" oats in the sense they they still have the
bran and the germ. (I've not sure of the distinction between
chaff and bran). Not in terms of the whole kernel remaining
    intact.

Quick oats are junk and are about as nutritious as sugar.
