Everyone knows there is no money in cycling and most of those player's
salaries if are higher than entire cycling team budgets.

Cycling is a blue collar sport and nobody in Europe with a decent
background or education would aspire to be a pro bike rider. You look
at these guys and where they are from and basically it was a choice
between being a pro bike rider or working in a factory.

Well until you erect stands and turnstyles along the route cycling
isn't going to generate the money baseball does. Baseball, football
(American and real), hockey, etc has total control over the people
watching. These people pour big bucks into the teams' pockets. With the
exception of a velodrome nobody pays to watch a cycling race. Now
imagine if every spectator at a cycling race paid $5 to line up on the
side of the road. How many were there on Alpe d'Huez last year?

Don't you think that most of the money is from TV and not from ticket
sales? For many pro team sports if the stadium wasn't subsidized by
local taxpayers it wouldn't exist. Pretty clever of the owneres. They
get us all to help pay for the staduim which breaks even or loses money
but they get to keep all the concession and TV money. Not a bad idea!

The smaller markets can sell out their stadium all they want - even
fill up the sky boxes and other luxury suites, but, yes, the
difference between the have's and have nots are the local and regional
TV markets/deals. New York Yankees would have to have a decade of
misery before their team falls out of the top spot, money-wise.
