  1. With teams like Fassa, Domina, TM or Lotto it's obvious who the designated
sprinter is. But what about teams that have more than one option? Who gets
the leadout between the following (assuming both have good legs at the end
    of the stage).

    AG2R Kirsipuu or J.P. Nazon?
    C.A Hushovd or D. Nazon?
    QSD Boonen or Paolini?

Maybe whoever is closer to Petacchi's wheel is the guy 🙂

Paolini will be leading out Boonen.

    - or also Stefano Zanini on QSD, who won on the Champs Elysées in 2000.

And on Cofidis, Stuart O'Grady or Jimmy Casper? This seems to be an almost
    exclusively French problem...

    Absolutely.

I doubt Domina Vacanze controls the peloton in the Tour as they did in
the Giro. Patacchi's wheel is likely not where you'll find the
sprinters. Kirsipuu, Hushovd, and Boonen are likely the first option
    for their respective team.

What year are you talking about? DV didn't control anything in the 2004
    Giro.

Why do you ask the question about Boonen or Paolini? Isn't it pretty
obvious? Boonen ofcourse! For different reasons.
    1. Boonen has already won 13 races this season and is now 11th on the
    UCI ranking.
    2. If i'm not mistaken, Paolini is out for the Tour
    3. Boonen will be the main contender of Petacchi
    4. Has a chance to take the yellow jersey in Belgium if he ride the
prologue as he did in the Sterelektrotoer two weeks ago where he beat
    Voigt and Bartko.

That's my mistake. I meant Fassa Bortolo.

    Like FredRod?

How did I know you were just dying to work that in?

So because ONE time somebody won by sitting on Petacchi's wheel means
that's where the sprinters should be? Maybe you missed the rest of the
Giro, but Petacchi won NINE sprints, and whoever was on his wheel was
    dusted.

I don't know what chance sprinter's have with their own lead-out men,
but it has to be better than ten percent.

The reason they are not alongside him before the sprint is because it's
tough to find three guys who are as fast as the last three from FB.

Paid professionals at the top of the sport know more about how to beat
Pettachi than you do. What you seem them doing is the best way they can
    come up with.

Don't you find it interesting that paid professionals wouldn't be able

In the Giro, I would agree. In the Tour, not a chance.

Zabel had Petacchi's wheel in Stage 1. Kirsipuu did not.

Whoever is feeling better on the day if there is not a clear sprint
leader for the team. This happened yesterday with Kirsipuu and Nazon.

I don't claim to have figured anything out. I think we are talking
about two different things. The quality of competition is higher in
the Tour than in the Giro. The only way to win a flat stage in the
Giro was to sit on Petacchi's wheel and hope.

In the Tour, teams are able to disrupt the Fassa train. So far, all
three winners have won in different ways, but they haven't used
Petacchi's wheel in the final run into the finish. For the most part,
I've seen Zabel looking for Petacchi's wheel, and the best he's
    managed was a 2nd today, I believe.

    Roland

  17. Well, Petacchi is 0 for 3 so far ................ and he won't make it
to the end of the Tour, he'll lose it in the mountains, especially if he
hasn't taken more than a stage by then ..........

Think Petacchi must be getting pretty frustrated by now, wondering if he'll
win any stages in the tour?
I'm pretty happy for McEwen, his first yellow of his career.
