Just kidding!!! I ride a plain old year-2001 5900. The catalog versions with my name on them are
mostly photoshop fabrications. My name was probably used for a couple of reasons, including it being
long enough to show that you can put anybody's name on one, and something of an inside joke (We're
one of their more vocal dealers regarding the OCLV... rarely do I pass up an opportunity to share an
opinion with them... maybe they thought they could shut me up by putting my name on the bike? If so,
it didn't work!).

directory of Bike shops in Toronto and one of them was called "Chain Reaction" so I searched for it
in google. Apparently your site came up, but I thought it was still located in toronto.. then I saw
that $549 Trek!! I thought it was in Canadian dollars and I was ready to buy one RIGHT THERE. I've
been looking for a cheap entry level road bike for a while..

Then I found out the prices were in US.

Why would someone pay $500 for a paint job on a clone bike?

Well there are less expensive options, such as the $150 paint jobs. As for the "clone bike" comment,
fine. But since I'm no longer given bikes to race (and the last one I was given is getting pretty
old), I'm looking to buy a new bike. Rode a 5200. Seemed nice. I might get one. Or I might get
something else. But not a Columbine or anything. I'm not a huge fan of the stock Trek paint schemes,
so maybe I'd buy one of their optional schemes. Not a $500 one, though. I agree that seems
excessive. But I do want a bike I like looking at.

I don't think Mario Andretti could have raced a '78 Pinto (or any other year) to victory. Lance, on
the other hand, doesn't seem to be held back by his TREK 5900, 5500, Madone or Time Trial bike.
They're all completely-stock frames.

If a clone's good enough for Lance, it's more than good enough for me.

Trek is a fine bike (not to my taste in terms of geometry) but the thing which has always kept me
from buying one is this:

If I want to spend $4000+ for a bike, I want people to go: "wow, thats a pretty bike" or "I've never
seen one of those before" and examine the curves of the frame, the paint job, ask about what its
like to ride.

With $4000 on a trek you get "Oh - you got a new bike, nice weather we're having huh"

I really like Trek's (and Klein's) idea of offering custom paint jobs. Nice or unique paint is obviously more important to some people than others so offering it as an option makes total sense - and having your name on it as well emphasizes that it's a custom piece and the owner is proud of his/her bike.

Nah, I want people to see me on my $4000+ bike and think "Wow, that guy is so fast, how does he find
the time to train and work at the shop a zillion hours a week and spend time with his family etc???

(In all seriousness, I've never really cared that much about what my bikes looked like. For me, the
most important thing a bike can offer is the chance to ride 100 miles, when I'm out of shape, and
not feel like I've been pounded into the ground. That's what I'm willing to pay for...)

I'm OK with that approach to bikes, but I'm not about to pay anywhere near $4000 for a bike, and
I'm kinda more utilitarian. I want a bike that's fun to ride and does what it can to help my aging
body go as fast as possible. Looks are nice, but I'd rather be the first across the line. But
that's just me.
