Who makes the best Helmets

I've owned both and it's a tough to choose between them. It comes dow
to what you think looks coolest. For me it's Giro (also slightly coole
heat wise)

lovin my Lima. was $175 but as I use it every day, worth it

very comfortable and adjustable/light/cool-air-wis

my 2c worth..

go the comfort/durability route and ask if you can get replaceabl
padding bits as they are a pain when 'gone' or worn ou

but most important of all (no cfsmtb they dont come in 'hello-kitty
designs!) the red ones go faster!!

I can recommend Limar Helmets, tested one a couple of weeks ago, it's broken
now but most likely saved my life.

The "micro lock" (the part at the back which you adjust so the helmet fits)
has pretty much fallen apart and I am struggling to find a replacement part.

I would definitely ask for a second set of all the padding and micro lock at
purchase before I bought one of these helmets again.

have not gone through Australia Standards testing and have therefore no
been OZ standards approved. So the ones we see out on the road have bee

Other helmets like Met and Limar are approved. Met was approved a lon
time before Limar and therefore have had a big head start on the othe
helment brands. I personally like the Limar 909 design over Met. The Me

Just so you know the reason that the Giro and Lazer helmets are not sol
in Oz is because they do not meet Australian Standard. The Australia
standard is a lot stricter on materials, impact rating, etc and Giro an
Lazer dont feel the need to meet them

I would suggest Lima or Met. I have had 2 Met's both of which saved m
head in a big way. The last time i got a discount from my LBS so tha
they could use the rements for a display

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it is illegal (in Australia) t
wear them cycling but you CAN wear them for racing??? I maybe totall
off track but I'm sure I read this somewhere. I purchased a Giro Pneum
in Australia and it has a sticker saying it did not meet Aust Standards

Can someone enlighten us

Hang on. Giro helmet's ARE sold in Australia and DO meet Australian
standards. I've got a Giro E2 with the standards sticker on it and they have
a number of other models that have passed testing too.

One of the reasons I didn't buy one a while back was their

Very strange. I've never seen these. I know for motorcycle racing you need
an Aus standards sticker on the helmet to be allowed to compete. This is
obviously different for at least some bicycle racing.

100% positive. I even read a review of the E2 in an Aussie mag and they
mentioned how they had to change the design of the straps slightly to get it
passed Aus standards approval. A friend also has an Exodus which he bought
about 3-4 years ago and it's got Aus standards approval too. Maybe they
haven't got as many (any?) road helmets passed?

Looks like it has. From the article apparantly it comes down to how many of
a particular model they think they can sell to the local market. They have
to submit a few for initial testing and one out of every 50 or 100 sold. The
whole process costs a fair bit so they have to be pretty sure they're going
to sell enough helmets to recover the cost.

How'd you go with sizing, buying from the UK

I mean, you can match the 'X'cm size with other helmets but the actua
shape might differ. e.g. I found the MET Anaxagore to be really goo
except for a bulge at the back which made it totally uncomfortable.
ended up with a MET Ippogriffo, which didn't have the bulge at the bac
- but I'd never know this unless I tried it on

I hoped and prayed and hoped some more that they'd fit. Sure, they coul
have been completely the wrong shape for my head. But as luck would hav
it, they weren't. I figured that if they were seriously uncomfortable
I'd just sell them and try again. :-

I'll put it this way, haven't ridden my road bike in 6 weeks and rode m
mountain bike for the first time in a month yesterday. ;-) Nah, I thin

a mate get run over in a road-rage attack, I also have a complete lac
of motivation. Noone tells me to ride, so I don't ride. I only ride whe

LOOK FORWARD to the 1/20. :-P I've been holding off on selling my roa
bike because I'm hoping this is just a phase that'll pass. But at th
moment, sadly, my cycling is at a complete dead end. 😠 Sure, I lov
watching it, reading about it, talking about it, but actually gettin
out there and riding is beyond me at the moment. It's really quit
pathetic! :-

What races are you doing at the moment Stu? Or are you just building u
form before making your big comeback? :-

I had DVT (Feb 03) in my left leg and because of a misdiagnosis by
doctor it is permanently swollen and painfull

My 2¢... if you really feel like selling your bike , do it! Keep readin
the mags and watching races... you'll soon see something you'll want t
ride....then buy it

Not good, but it happens. The same thing happens in cars but peopl
don't stop driving. I've had my own share of close calls, witnessed
few and heard of many more but I try not to think too much about th
negatives and just ride. You can leave the bike for a while but I'
sure, eventually, you will want to pedal some more

Nah, we all get like that sometimes (well, I do!). You just need to tak
some time off the bike. If you want to ride again, you'll do it. I
not.. well, you'll get fat. :-

What about doing some different riding? Stick to bike paths for a while
Ride with slower mates/family. Try biketrials 🙂 Ride mtb - bugger al
cars in the bush. If you want to keep up some bike fitness you can tr
indoor training. Ride while watching Kranked or similar or some roa
racing, if that works for you. You might find watching last year's tou
on the trainer will be enough to get you pumped and riding outside

Thanks Dom and Stu for your words of encouragement. 🙂 This week, a mate from cycling turned up on my doorstep and bullied me into going for a ride with him. I did go along, hadn't lost as much form as I'd anticipated and could keep up (was even setting the pace for the first 10-15k which was nice!) 😉 Later in the week, another friend asked me to train with her, and I thought, hey, why not? So had a good ride then too. We got abused 5 times in about a 3km section of Whitehorse Rd, but my outlook was different and I basically thought 'hey, thats their problem' and kept on riding.

All was well, I didn't die, I enjoyed myself and I got a bit fitter
I guess I'm getting back into the swing of things and that'
partially thanks to you guys. So thanks! 😄 Now its just a matter o
building up some form, then doing some crits at METEC, and fro
there, who knows? :cool
