Who made this bike?

You probably did a google search for "forest ranger" and "mountain bike" and similar search terms. I
had no idea that some forest rangers used radar guns to bag mountain cyclists until now! Jesh,
really people, get a life.

But I digress ...

At any rate, as you found out I'm sure, that search turned up nothing. However, "Forest Ranger" is a
trade mark, and you say it was built in the USA ... soooooooooo ... onto the United States patent &
trademark office ...

Me either. Mostly what I saw was rants about people having run-ins with a forest ranger and how bike
riders had the right to . . . . well, you know. Enough to give Vandeman material for life.

So, I thought I would ask here, expecting The Masters to jump all over the post and give me a few
withering remarks about how to use Google or some such.

So, I was really surprised when it just sat there for a couple of days. And then I thought "Can it
be that I stumped The Masters? Really?" and I felt a little god about that, but then I thought
"But wait a sec. I still don't know who made this thing, so stumping these guys is not very
productive, is it?"

It is? (or was? as it were.) I guess you can trademark just about anything these days. There is no
indication on the name stickers saying TM or SM or anything like that. I thought that maybe Schwinn
made it using their old "Ranger" name in desperation maybe before they went bust because in one
place, Forest was omitted and it says "Ranger Built in USA."

That really was clever -- looking up the trademark.

It is actually in pretty good condition. I hope to never use anything that came from the people that
made the fasteners, though since all the nuts and bolts are rusty, but this thing was out in the
rain a long time and no other serious rust except the chain.

BCA was (in '93 anyway) a cheap contract builder... The BCA name has some history but the
Pennsylvania company had (AFAICT) no relation to the historic company.

(Bellow are my experiences with the company and may not be indicative)

The bikes suffered greatly from [censored] poor finish quality (the fasteners you mentioned, as well as
some pretty ugly welding jobs and fragile (ugly) paint) ... technically there were only a couple
things wrong with them beyond a tendency to spec the bottom of the line components in some little
noticed areas (Bottom bracket/ Front hub/headset). Most were built with generic 4130 tube sets, and
Rigida rims.

They were over priced for the quality level they showed. You often needed an impact gun to remove
the Bottom Brackets (many of which were [censored] from day one, and the wheels needed to be basically
rebuilt out of the box due to problems with the wheel building machines.

In 1992 Canada imposed a 30% duty on all bikes coming from Taiwan because of dumping by some of the
big builders. (You could by the same bike in Canadian and US dollars at an almost 1 to 1 ratio.)
Because of this a couple of Canadian companies went to BCA for bikes Maxxam was one such company...
they ended up getting toasted, the bikes were simply too ugly to retail well.

All that said... fix the bits that need fixing but don't invest too much...

Yup. This lines up with what I am seeing. 4130.

I just dated it to 1994-95 since it has a Suntour XR-100 drive train.

I would say it is on par with the $80 Pacific Bikes.

I am not going to spend any more money on it. I bought a new cable and a cover for $3 since the
front derailer cable was completely frozen, but that's it. No more money needs to be spent. It
runs fine now.
