Which USA mountain bikes?

I would recommend getting a couple of MTB magazines and checking the
reviews. This years models are coming out this time of year so the mags
should have lots of reviews. You have a lot of choice at that price.

Good brands are Giant, Specialized, Trek, Norco, Scott, GT, Kona etc.

See my other post about importing but get something that is available
in the UK so at least you stand a chance if something goes wrong of
getting the sympathy of the local agent. If you buy one of the US only
brands you are going to have to send it all the way back and argue it
on the telephone.

Here in the US, getting warranty coverage on privately imported/gray market
consumer goods is next to impossible, the importers and retailers see no
reason to warranty a product that they didn't bring into the country.
Wouldn't importers and distributors in the UK feel the same way about goods
that were privately imported from the US (or anywhere else)?

Not only are there "US only brands", there seem to be individual models that
are available in one country but not in the other, from makers that sell in
both countries.

I've not found it a problem on reputable brands. I've bought the bikes
in person from local bike shops in the US when I'm over there rather
than mail order them so I don't have the "bike arrived damaged" problem
to deal with. On the rare occassion something has gone wrong - mainly
on components - I've not had a problem when I've said how I bought it
and where. I think they treat you differently if it was a private
purchase off a dealer in another country rather than from a grey
importer or by international mail order to get round their import
agreements. YMMV

Indeed - just as an example, visit the Bianchi website; there are
US-only models, and bikes which are available in some bits of Europe
but not others.
