Which rim for randoneering

have used MA3's up to now but looking to upgrade, think I'll go for
Open Pro on 105 hubs if they are OK, are they slightly narrower than
MA3? the reason I ask is that my new tyres (Vittoria Rubino) are a
tight squeeze in the mudguards and they've stopped making Michelin
Axial Bi-Sports.

I've used 23mm Rubinos on Open pros with the small size SKS mudguards with
no clearance problems. Now using Conti GP 4 season which are a bit tight on
clearance but a better winter tyre than the Vittoria Open Corsa CX I now use
in summer.

thnaks; will try and wear the Rubinos out in the summer sans guards by
which time I may have found some more suitable (ie the same colour, a

I was, until recently, using Vittorio Rubinos (23C) and never had a
problem fitting the tyre on my MA3 rims (32h). Now I've replaced the
worn-out Rubinos with Panaracer Paselas (25C) which are an absolute
bugger to get on the MA3s. Seem to be a good tyre, though - reasonably
fast rolling and good traction.

I was thinking of an Open Pro rim to go with teh new front wheel I shall
be building on to a Schmidt SON hub, mainly on price grounds, though I
have been told that the A719 is a good heavy-duty rim - maybe /too/
heavy, perhaps?

105 hubs are great, btw. Very smooth and reliable, if my wheels are
anything to go by.

anything smaller than 28 will drown on a 19 mm wide 719! Open Pro's are
fine, or a cheaper cxp22

Open pros butted s/s spokes and 105 hubs and I built them myself. very
durable and light but I've just retired the front as I worried about rim
thickness after 5 years use.

about 15-20k miles max.)
36h 3x SS db spokes. Second or third set of wheels I built.

I use bontrager 23mm tyres and like them so far.

I do have an unused (ie never used) old (12-14yr) 105 front hub 36h if
anyone is seriously interested. I'll probably get a dynohub in the new
wheel when I build it.

THats great but I don't think I'll be able to source 12 year old rims
any more, if I could I'd get MA2s and wouldn't need to ask. ;-)

Hmmm . . that might be a suitable match to my replacement rear wheel
(built on a 105). The front Maillard hub seems to need increasingly
frequent rebiulds.

But by now it has probably found a new home?

Got my new Open Pros yesterday, they look remarkably similar to MA3's.
Looks like it will be the Ribble for Mad Jack and indeed everything
else this season; if I can face fitting the new mudguards (before
putting the old ones back on for Thorne-Edinburgh as they are going in
the bin at Edinburgh)

They're quite different, really. Open Pros are deeper, lighter, and have
sockets connecting the inner and outer walls to deal with spoke tension
better.

Yes; noticed those p*c*u*r* fairy friendly little lugs on the OP's.....
Dang; forgot the Velox rim tape, where am I going to get that before
next Saturday if not working in London? They do seem very light even
with Sora hubs, not sure what the new thinking behind these new thick
cotton reel type hubs is but even 105s seem to have them. And proper
Shimano skewers for the first time ever. I might have to get the Solvol
Autosol out on the rest of the alloy bits.
