  1. I want to do a nice "rural" marathon - small field and backroads/trails. My wife wants me to do a
"city" one - fairly large field and city streets (Lakeshore Blvd in Toronto). The small one is in
July but it is pretty far north so wouldn't be too hot. Other than the obvious pleasure of running
in the country vs. the city, any other comments? I may not have the momentum to keep training hard
until the fall...but it might get me closer to my time goal.

    Confused in Canada.

  2. Where is the small one in July? The fall marathon is the Scotia Bank event?

Do the one you want to do (unless your wife gets you a suite at the Royal York for after the Toronto
marathon and promises to put on a show in a skimpy running outfit).

  3. Personally I am a city boy. I like the crowds of the city, lots of excitement. I can run in the
country anytime I want, running around the Pentagon and the government center of DC for example is
    a real joy.

  4. When I decided to run my first marathon back in 2000 I basicly had a choice between the MCM in DC or
the much smaller Richmond, Virginia marathon. Richmond is city marathon but a much smaller event
than the MCM. Anyway, I'm SOOO glad I chose MCM. Huge crowd support, runners around you all the way,
great sites, great race support. Doug Burke

there are a couple of marathons in Ottawa:

there is the National Capital Marathon in May - fast, flat, and scenic. always nice weather -
starts downtown and travels on a roadway alongside the Rideau Canal, Dow's Lake, then the Rideau
River, and then you wind your way back downtown again on the other side of the river, lake and
    canal.... two loops.

the Ottawa Fall Colours Marathon in October. cooler weather, just a bit hilly from what i hear
(haven't run it myself), out on country roads through a few neighbourhoods but mostly along
    wooded areas.

if you think you'd be ready for May, i'd recommend that one. the weather is normally far more
favourable then. at last year's October race, it was chilly AND bucketed down rain. not a nice
combo. luckily, i had finished my 5k in plenty of time to get out of there before the weather
    onslaught.

  6. Is the country one the one in Huntsville in July? I did the Toronto run in Oct and that was my
first. Like the old commercial, "Oh what a feeling". I think I will try the country one next just to
be "one " with nature. I know a guy who did the Huntsville last year and he said it was so tranquil
he had no problem zoning, the one in Toronto for me was a bit harder to zone because there were so
many spectators cheering you on but that was worth not being able to zone.

I chose the Casino Niagara International Marathon for my first. (2002) = Not a big marathon and once

Isn't the real question whetehr appease your wife and do the a city run or please yourself and go
rural? Only you and your member know the answer.

    Confused in Canada.

The Hudson-Mohwak marathon in Albany that starts outside of the city and runs along a path along the
Mohwak river. Everybody I know that has run it has enjoyed it. As I remember it is run in either
    late October or early November.

Albany may not be the big city experience your wife is looking for though.

As an added bonus the marathon is a net downhill.

    Have fun, Andy

Oct. 19th this year. See hmrrc.comhmrrc.com

I did it a few times in past years. Some of it is scenic such as the paths along the Mohawk River
and then the Hudson river. There is a sucky trashy piece of Albany in the middle but nothing is
perfect. The weather and wind is is like any Oct. race in NY - unpredictable.

Speaking of unpredictable, will someone tell the weather gods that it is April and snow is not
appreciated? The damn snow plows deposited a few inches of snow in my driveway Saturday morning.

  13. Not Huntsville, "Friendly Massey". With all the crappy weather I'm not really getting the mileage I
want yet, so the ScotiaBank one may give me better results - if I can stay revved up until almost
Oct. I was kind of looking forward to having it all accomplished by the end of July. No comments on
the difference between 26 miles of backroads vs. pavement? I know the support will be much better at
the Scotiabank, but I read a few comments last year the the route was "less than inspiring".

Looking forward to the Forest City Half in a month.

And yes, I do try to keep my wife happy, whenever possible....
