  1. Hi all,

I'm looking to buy an exercise machine but there's so many
out there I don't know which one to choose from. I'm
debating between an Elliptical, Treadmill, and the Tony
    Robins Gazelle cross Trainer.

I really want to flatten my abs & firm my legs & butt. Which
machine would do all these things?

    Thanks & Take care, SPOONS 178/156/140 WW's Goal 158,

  2. I really know nothing about exercise equipment and how it
deals with specific body areas. I'm a firm believer that the
only piece of equipment you should buy is the one you will
use for it's intended purpose (exercise as opposed to
decoration of clothing supporter <G>😉. The bikes and
treadmills definitely work your legs, but the purpose of the
aerobic exercise you get from them is overall exercise - not
spot reductions. If you're heart rate is up, you will burn
calories, which will aid in burning fat. If you want spot
reductions for specific areas then you probably will be
better off saving your money and working on floor exercise
    routines (just my opinion anyway).

As far as the Tony Robins machinery ... I tend to stay away
from anything and everything that is endorsed or sold by a
specific person with one goal in mind ... money. I also
look at the marketing strategies. If I remember this
machine correctly, it spouts quick results, yada yada yada
    - nothing comes quick or easy - I stop listening and
believing. I have no idea as to how stressful or
weightbearing this machine is. I have tried a similar type
machine in a gym long ago, found I couldn't do it more than
a few minutes before my knees would start throbbing. Do
some research on the internet to see what actual users and
gym enthusiasts have to say about something like this - as
    opposed to other well known
    (vs. fad) pieces of machinery.

    Again, just my opinion.

all and none. Exercise doesn't influence where you lose
weight. It will help you lose weight and will certainly make
you fitter, but it won't target specific areas.

So...which one do you like? Thats the one you should
    get...maybe

    Does that help - I bet it doesn't 🙂

  5. My best friend has a Gazelle and she swears by it. I have
been on it a couple of times, but not sure how much I would
use it if I had it in my home.

Is space and issue, if it is, take that into consideration.
Have you had a chance to try them all out, it would be best
to try them each and find what you like best, you are more
likely to use the machine then.

  6. Hi all,

Thanks for such great input. After doing some research I now
know that I can NOT use one machine to target certain body
parts. Plus Joyce gave some great info.

The other day I happen to bump into a neighbor & I was
speaking to her about these machines and then she tells me
that she has a Gazelle, so I went over there and tried it
for 3 days at 25 minutes each. I worked up a good sweat and
my thighs are really sore but that's it. Now I know I don't
like it. The gliding motion just doesn't feel right.

I also went to some department stores and tried some
elliptical machines and there's just so many styles &
features. But at least the circular motion feels normal,
it's like riding a bike, walking even running, plus you can
increase resistance so as your body gets stronger the
machine grows with you. Where as the Gazelle there isn't any
resistance so when you get to a certain point you've plateau
and the machine isn't growing with you. As for a treadmill
well I haven't tried one yet but I was told that it's high
    maintenance & hard on joints.

I want to go to an actual fitness store and try out
different machines to see which one suits me best. I don't
want a machine that will end up being a piece of furniture.
Thanks again for all your great opinions.

  7. I'd go for the plain old treadmill if I were you, or simply
use your feet and walk outside. Cross-trainers come and go,
but walking is always the tried and true.

I agree with one of the other posts, in that you can't take
weight just off your belly or off your butt or whatever. It
comes off where it wants to leave from, not a terrible lot
you can do about where. I know some will disagree, but this
is my experience. Plus, just because you buy the newest
gaget, does NOT mean you'll use it - trust me, I know! These
    things make great clothes hangers...

  8. The Gazelle virtually has no stress on the knee joints, as
you are not lifting your feet and causing impact to the
knee. You are swinging your legs back and forth along with
your arms. If you have hip problems, that might be an issue,
but the knees and ankles would not be an issue at all.

  9. Hi Spoons, Have you thought about exercise tapes? I've got
the Tai Bo series with Billy Blanks and it seems to be a
really good workout without any machines, four video tapes
in all - beginner, intermediate, advanced & 10 minute
workout. Sometimes I use them if I don't feel like going to
    the gym. Julie

  10. I did read that it was considered low impact, but I know it
killed my knees - don't know why (other than my knees are
nasty anyway). Maybe it was from the constant swinging
action? My son said the same thing when he was on it ...
cold also just have been the machine that our health club
had. Doesn't much matter I guess, it wasn't for me - I know
I wouldn't have stayed with it more than a handful of times.

  11. I don't know who gave you your information on the treadmill,
but I have not ever found it to be high maintenance (and I
have had one for many, many years) nor hard on joints. It's
for walking ... we walk every day. The machine just keeps
you at a constant pace is all. Now possibly if you are going
to jog on it, then it could be tougher on the joints, as
jogging is more weight bearing ... but not just walking. And
many of the newer models have springs, which make the
surface much easier even for running. My son uses it to run,
for leg strengthening (again, for the pitcher in him). He
used one with the springs at school, said the difference is
incredible - much easier on his knees than running on the
pavement. This might be something for you to keep in mind
when you are looking. The extra cost is well worth the
comfort. As for maintenance ... on the old treadmill I only
had to give a squirt of lubricant spray under the belt
occassionally (very occassionally). I'm not sure what is
    high maintenance about that.

My daughter has an eliptical machine - swears by it. I don't
care for it at all - again, for me it was tough on my nasty
knees. I found it much tougher than using a recumbant bike.
I think it had something to do with the circular motion and
standing ... more weight coming down on my knees on the
downward swing, more resistance on the upward. Maybe now
that I weigh less it would be easier, but at my heaviest, I
had a very difficult time with it. Hubs recumbant bike is
nice - not sure if you even threw that into your mix of
ideas or not. It's just like riding a bike, no achy knees
for me - the trick (for me) was finding the right spot to
get the seat adjusted ... too far or too close and it put
more pressure on my knees. Ya know, I'm starting to dislike
    my knees. <G>

Try them all out! I found the sports stores to be wonderful
about starting machines up and letting us test each of them
... they actually encouraged it. And no one hovered over us
at all - let us use them as long as we wanted.

Have you made any decision yet, or are you still looking
    around and testing?

  13. Hi Joyce,

Well it was a salesperson at a fitness store that told me
that treadmills are high maintenace. He said the same thing
you said...treadmills are not hard on joints if used for
walking but if you're jogging even with the soft spring
    it'll be hard on joints.

As you can tell...Yes I went to a fitness store and I tried
a treadmill, elliptical, recumbant bike & a stepper. BOY!!!
    what a work out..hahaha

I'm leaning towards an elliptical but I'm still going to do
some more testing since these machines cost a bundle. Price
is what helding me back from buying one today $3000 for a
machine is something I want to think over. Plus I want to
look at some less expensive models.

    Quoted message said:

a constant pace is all. Now possibly if you are going to
    jog on it, then

    it could

    Quoted message said:

be tougher on the joints, as jogging is more weight

    just

    Quoted message said:

walking. And many of the newer models have springs, which

    This might

    Quoted message said:

be something for you to keep in mind when you are looking.
    The extra cost

again, for me it was tough on my nasty knees. I found it

    but at
