  1. The other day I was out running, 0 degrees F. Nike Dri-fit, next to my
skin, then a cotton mock turtle neck. On top of that I had a medium weight
Lands End fleece jacket on. I was plenty warm. I was out about an hour.

When I finished up, I noticed that my arms, shoulders, and back were caked
in ice crystals or frost. OK, not a big deal, my sweat must have "breathed
through" my fleece, collected on the outside, and froze.

So I changed shirts since they were sweaty and jacket since it was now wet
and went out for another run. This time in a cheapo (but breathable,
supposedly, with a back vent) shell that I bought at a well known national
chain of sporting goods. At this time it was about 3F.

Once again, out for an hour. This time, though, no ice crystals.

Why the difference? Which jacket is better?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Jeff.

I am guessing that most of your vaporized sweat went out your back
vent, rather than making its way to the outside through the fabric of
    your fleece jacket.

  3. Oh, and the better one is the one you like the best for those
    conditions.

  4. I was out the other day in 0° weather with a wind chill in the negative digits.
All I wear is a t-shirt from the race track with a gore-tex jacket from RRS
over that. I stay quite comfortable. The jacket was a little pricey but I
bought it in something like 1994 so I figure even if it was a little pricey,
considering I've got ten years use (and still going) out of it then it wasn't
    bad.

    Ah-ha! Makes sense...

Heck, even if it cost $250, since you've had it for 10 years, that's only
$25 a year. Good deal. Still, shelling out the bucks in the beginning is
    tough.

I've seen some very nice Gore-Tex stuff (last year's models) at expos for
    pretty good prices...

Well, I'm looking at the latest catalogue from RRS and their gore-tex jackets
are selling for $165 and the pants are $99
