which cycle

A municycle or MUni is a mountain unicycle. Like a mountain bike, it has
a wide knobby tire and a heavy duty frame. Sometimes it also has brakes.
I don't do trials, so I can't answer your main question.

If you want a trials unicycle, anything with a splined hub, a strong
wheel, and a wide 20" trials tire is good. Being a trials rider, you
probably know what makes a good wheel.

If you're in the US, have a look at unicycle.com
In Canada, look up Darren Bedford (I don't know how to contact him)
In europe check out municycle.com (in german until you click the english
flag), unicycle.uk.com, unicycle.se or ajata.de (in german only)

The Onza costs a little less, but seems to be just as good (Someone else
want to field this one?)

If you're new to unicycling, and don't want to invest $400 right off the
bat, you might want to look at a Torker DX 20". Splined hub, good wheel,
great saddle, although the frame is not wide enough to accomidate one of
the 20"X2.5" trials tires. But, for someone just starting out, it might
do you just fine.

Originally, my take on "municycle" is that it's a word made up by the
press. I don't remember us calling our unicycles municycles, just munis
(or MUnis). But I've read many press articles about mountain unicycling
where the word "municycle" pops up, even when I was the main source for
the story.

But now that there's a shop called municycle.com, it's definitely a more
recognized word among us unicyclists. The site is an interesting mix of
English and German. I like the way it has an explanation up front of
what's the meaning of unicycle, einrad, muni and municycle. I just wish
I could read it better.

Einrad translates directly into German as "one wheel." That's their word
for unicycle. That's totally rad, man.

thanks for the help so far guys,

sockmonster-I am afraid that if i buy a non specific trials uni or a
cheap one like the torker that it will give out on me after a bit. The
person i met said that his original uni, a norco one broke after he
learnt to hop up stairs. Im pretty sure that im going to want to stick
with it if i get one.

my height will be a problem. Im 6'3" tall so is a 20 inch wheel going

You can have the best equipment available, but it won't help your
technique. I say get something in the lower middle range, then upgrade
as you become more interested. However, it would be just plain sad if
you got a KH, and it ended up sitting in the garage.

Don't worry about your height. Just get a seatpost that's long enough.
The axle is not sticking out on the new KH hubs, so that shouldn't be a
problem either.

sockmonster- i already do bike trials so i know that learning things
like this takes patience, so im quite sure it wouldnt sit around unless
i got injured or something. Wouldnt i end up spending more money if i
got a cheaper uni then it broke.

questions and then provide you with the right uni for your situation.

You are so right on. You are answering your own questions better than
some of the other people here in my opinion. haha

Id go with either the KH or the Onza. I've got a kh and its a tank. I'm
6' and still have plenty of extra room on my stock KH seat post. I dont
think it will be a problem for you.

The new Kh's have the axle(spindle) nub fixed. The old ones (like i
have) really were a beast. My right ankle is raw. 🙄

From what ive heard, darren beford is great. I'd check with him on a uni
first. Unicycle.com is your other bet. They are building a reputation
for screwing up orders but they are still wonderful people and will
promptly correct their errors!

Im excited to see a trials biker getting into this. Im curious to hear
what you think and maybe some comaparisons and maybe you can come up
with some new techniques. (no pressure or anything 😄)

When you refer to it as a 'cycle' it reminds me of george peck in rough
terrain unicycling.

Just to let you know, I've purchased 3 unicyles from Unicycle.com in the
past 6 months, and I got exactly what I ordered. No screw ups at all.
Two orders was placed online and one was done by phone.

you're right thats a good thing to add. I've always used unicycle.com
and never had anything messed up. They are always very pleasant on the
phone as well. I did not mean to burn them, just stating what could
happen.
