  1. Hi

Been looking on ebay for a new chain for my 21 speed hybrid, in terms of
quality which of these are any good:

    KMC Z82
    KMC Z9000
    SRAM PC99
    SRAM PC990
    SRAM PC59
    SRAM PC58
    SRAM PC69
    Shimano HG939
    Shimano XTR
    XT
    LX

If it is stated as 9 speed, will it work with 7 speed sprockets also.

    thanks

Answer to last question first: No, a 9 speed chain is narrower and may jam
on or between cogs and chainwheels.

IMO get a SRAM 8 speed chain, PC58. I think a lot of the extra cost when you
go up the scale is to do with the amount of plating on the links (I could be
    wrong).
It may be just cosmetic but not only will a fully plated chain resist
corrosion it will also clean up nicer.
As a rule I use fully plated chains on my road bike 'cos I'm a ponce and
whatever's going at the right price for my mtb 'cos it's never clean enough
for long enough to worry about (except when it's in the garage and no-one
    can see it).

Get an 8 or 7 speed one, not 9 speed. It might work, but it's not worth it.
Avoid shimano - I'd recommend SRAM. Which leaves you the PC58 of the list
you've given. Make sure it includes the special link.
Also consider bike shops rather than ebay - there are several good online
ones if you don't have a decent local one.

Eg Settle Cycles (my local shop) do a PC48 for 6 quid, or PC58 for 10 quid -
the latter will be post free, the former you'll have to make the order up to
a tenner. You'll have to phone to ensure you get the quick link.

If you're changing the chain, you may well have to change the rear
sprockets/freewheel too. How long is 12 links of your existing chain?

    cheers,
    clive

There's not enough difference in width to jam between cogs, but 7 or
8-speed chain is cheaper and may shift better.

    Get SRAM PC58, Gary.

I use Sram PC-58 on my 7 speed and have no trouble at all.

Why not ebay? A PC58 chain is a PC58 chain, it doesn't matter where you buy
    it from.

I've bought loads of new cycling stuff off ebay at a fraction of the price
    your LBS would charge.

Price. Ebay may have some bargains, however it's also got a lot of
overpriced stuff. Eg the chain in question, PC58 - one seller has it at 7
    quid + 5 quid p+p, the other at 11 quid + 2.5 p+p. Settle sells them for a
tenner including postage. I haven't checked other dealers.

And TBH I'd be happier buying from a reputable dealer like Settle cycles
    than somebody off ebay. (*)

Certainly check ebay out - but do check the more conventional suppliers too.

    cheers,
    clive

(*) Yes, I know that people like SJSC sell on ebay too...

Yes, chains on eBay are always overpriced. Weird.

    SRAM over shimano every time

  10. Hi

Thasnks for replies, SRAM it is then.

I do quite a lot of miles commuting so i clean and measure the chain
regularly and change it at 1/16" stretch over a 12" section, i am just
about there again after 1100 miles.

Speaking as one of the people who recommended SRAM, I'm currently using
my first genuine Campagnolo 10 speed chain, and I have to say I'm very
impressed by how little wear it's showing (about 1,000 miles now, still
seems good as new). However, it (and the bike on which it is installed)
gets cleaned and fettled obsessively, so this may not be typical. /And/
it doesn't have a magic joining link.
