This is probably waaaaaaaay out of date, but back in the
eighties during a brief spell without a car, I caught a few
buses to the hills. There was one bus from Swansea up to
Tafarn y Garreg (head of the Swansea Valley) but it only ran
three times a day. I think the first was 8:30am and the
second 1:30pm or something like that. Last bus back may have
been at 5:30pm. There was also another bus that went up the
Neath valley from Swansea.

After the stress of trying not to miss the last bus back a
couple of times, I switched to cycling to the Beacons and
back instead.

Surely there's a bus service from Cardiff to Brecon? That
would be the ideal option for Pen y Fan if it stops at
Storey Arms.

I have no idea, TBH. Of course, our friend's main problem
will be getting back on Sunday. Once he's got to one of
the main stations he'll be fine, but getting a bus could
be a problem.

Yes, there's one that carries bikes for people cycling the
Taff Trail one way.

Excellent! Thanks for that Andy - my otherwise "I don't like
exercise" daughter will love that - she's been asking about
'doing' the Taff Trail on her bike for ages.

Maybe not that excellent. Further research reveals it's only
one service a day and only Sundays and Bank holidays through
the summer at that. I did the Talybont to Pontypridd bit and
back once. Seem to remember ending up in a shopping precinct
in Merthyr Tydfil trying to find a way out, getting chased
by a Yorkshire Terrier and lots of rain. Very nice though.

Ah. Oh well, I guess it's back to 'Mum's Taxi Service' then.
Never mind - it's as good an excuse as any for a couple of
hours messing around in the Beacons before driving down to
pick her up from wherever she collapses.
