Magellan are very good, but its really up to you to do the research.

I got mine from GPS Warehouse who seem pretty good
(http://www.gpsw.co.uk/). Sailing chandlers are usually good places as
GPS has been a commodity item on yachts for years and as a result
there's a much more mature market there: have a browse through a sailing
mag in Smiths for some idea of prices and contacts. In general avoid
the Big Walking/Climbing suppliers, who don't know very much about them
and charge a load more!

I've also used GPS Warehouse a few times and found them to be very good.
Decent folk to deal with and will answer any questions you may have either
by email or telephone. Stuff arrives quickly usually by Royal Mail Special
Delivery.

Just got my latest GPS from them a GPSMap 60CS - Brilliant!!!!!!!

I make that nearly £60 cheaper. I ordered mine three weeks ago when it
was out of stock (it's now on it's way to me). Sport Extreme were
charging £361 at the time and due to a lucky fluctuation in the exchange
rate of the euro since then I've only been charged £350 for it.

What's the battery compartment like? Folk have been complaining that
lower capacity batteries are loose and that a slight jolt or shaking the
unit can cause it to power off.

Apparently there are no springs. Apparently the high capacity
rechargeables are fractionally longer than normal AAs and Garmin have
designed the battery compartment to fit them, hence lower capacity
batteries are loose. Not using springs seems very silly if that's

I did notice that. They have 24meg of memory, so that's less than half

if you want to cram a lot of maps in there. Bigger screens too, but
most of the other features look the same, for example 20 saveable tracks

Or (if you have a PC!) www.tracklogs.co.uk, who will sell you a Garmin
GPS at a reasonable price, and provide some free digital mapping
(centred on your post code) so you can actually see where you went.

I haven't had a problem with the batteries on the 60CS, I use Duracell. I
understand that Garmin actually do a 'fix' for this supposed problem. I'm
sure there was someone posted on this Ng about a gadget that Garmin sent him
to cure the problem.

Mine's had some pretty rugged use and never shown a problem. Having said
that though, I used to have an Etrex Vista and never had problems with that
either. Guess I must be lucky :-)

I did consider waiting for the new Etrex but the memory really isn't enough
to take advantage of the autorouting features, IMHO you just can't load
enough maps into 24mb. It would be MUCH better if Garmin fitted their units
with some sort of expandable memory slot, suppose it would mess up the
waterproofing though.

Be warned that if you buy a cheap mapping GPS through Ebay it's likely
to come with an American basemap, not a European basemap. All the ones
I looked at were American.
