  1. Well, at the risk of getting mercilously antagonized here on
AMB, I'll say it. I've been running!

    I know, I know...it's not MTBing that's for sure, but I've
always wanted to try some distance running.

I did the Great Potato half-marathon last Saturday. Both
training and the actual event were quite a bit more
challenging than I had anticipated (not to mention that I
was 40 minutes late for the start!...but that's another
    story altogether).

I can pretty much come off the couch and do a 10k, so I
didn't think much about doubling that distance, but that
was a mistake. Let's just say I have a new respect for
    distance runners.

The question now is, do I build on this base and try a Fall
marathon...always wanted to, but WHAT a time commitment.
Geared riding, SSing, windsurfing, and just about all other
recreational activities will suffer horribly this Summer.

    Hmmmmmmm

Thanks for the conformation that SS riders do have
    mental illness.

This is the only type of running I do

Running is for when it is too cold or wet to ride.

Good to hear you're back into tri's (or are you?) Did you
    run Robie Creek?

I just figgerd you'd been SS-ing, windsurfing, and during
the rainy weeks we had, couch potatoing with high-energy
    barley drinks and chips.

I run (er, jog or shuffle) about once a week to keep my wind
up for SS-ing. Lotsa bang for the buck.

Hope you can keep July 30-31 free for McCall.

Your Surly is getting loooonelyyy...veryyy loooonelyyyyy...

Running is bad for your knees. Singlespeeding is good for
    your knees.

Now this I will attest to from personal experience.
Singlespeeding strengthens my knees and lower back, while
running seems to to stress and weaken them.

Definitely a very serious concern in attempting to go 26. 4
hours of pavement pounding just doesn't seem to be good for
    your body.

A Harvard-educated Physician friend once told me, "If you
are running more than 3 or 4 miles a day, you are running
    for something other than fitness."

No. didn't do Robie, next year I'd like to give it a shot.
Not planning to do the Spud Man either, just wanted to run a
distance race...would really like to do the full marathon,
but I just don't think I'm up to the commitment.

Well, training hasn't stemmed the flow of the barley
pops. =) A little sailing, a little geared riding, but
    mostly running.

I will probably continue to dabble in the faith as well,
regardless of the future race plans.

I'm still planning on being there...just hit the SS this
afternoon. What a beautiful day! AND a beautiful
    ride...Surly, there is no substitute.

    Alright Gman!.....

There are a lot of "training programs" that build up your
distance. In general if your not worried about speed, simply
keep adding length every week. Depending on your race date
you can work backwards to figure you how much length to add
each week to your long runs. For a marathon you want to be
able to comfortably do 20 miles as our long run at least 2
week out from your race date. You can do a google or get a
running book to check out the details. DON"T go to far to
fast, even though you may feel great it's not worth the
    injuries that can occur.

Also, get this book "Nutrition For Endurance Athletes" by
    Monique Ryan.

    Peace Bro,

    BTW Single Speeding helps tremendously!

LOL, I didn't intend that thread to become one about gun
rights... it didn't even enter my mind, actually... I just
thought everyone was in favor of carrying firearms. =P
