Where are you from, what do you do?

The Amashova race this weekend has R100 000 (± A$ 22 000) for the first cyclist to crack the 100km route in under 1hr55!

;D count me in too! I don't think I'll even be close to that time!

Hey guys,

I'm also from Johannesburg, South Africa. Gearing up for the 94.7 and hoping to ride a 3hr. Been training since April for this years event. Done 1 Argus and two 94.7's so far as well as the usual calendar fillers. Been riding for 3 yrs now, before that I was a bit of a couch potato but now I'm even thinking of an Ironman  :p

During the day I manage an Inbound sales call centre, train every morning ('cept mondays) from 05h00 to 06h00 rain or shine.

Tips for 94.7 (In my humble opinion):
Be careful of the section of Main rd from Witkoppen rd to William Nicol. It feels like a small incline but it takes it out of you if you don't pace yourself properly.
Watch the road surface along the Rooihuiskraal section, if you don't pay attention, you may be adding a pothole with your helmet.
Hyde Park hill is a doddle, DON"T let it psyche you out, if you've done the Detour then you've done that little Ou Kaapse Weg hill and you'll know what a real climb is.;)
The finish has changed so there won't be that cramping climb of the Mineshaft on Kyalami, instead it will be onto the track, immediatly left down the finish straight to the line. this means that you can whack the last section from Woodmead to the entrance to Kyalami without having to save anything for the mineshaft. The last climb up to Kyalami from the Jukskei river is short and with enough momentum from the downhill from Woodmead is fairly easy.
Oh yes, don't skid on the Bar-One paving at the Zoo  :D

Anyway thats my 2c worth. Enjoy the races, enjoy the acid!!!

okay, this is my first post and it seemed the right place to do it.

I'm 38 years old and live in South Wales UK and I am a Printer.

I cycle just for fun, but sometimes it doesn't feel like it. I love cycling in all weathers except rain so as a result haven't been getting out to much lately, from what I've  read there are some serious cycling being done by some of you but if you don't mind I love to read the post's and maybe pick up some tips.
Maybe I should have mentioned that I cycle strictly off-road (roads are boring) and my journeys vary from 10-15 miles up to 30-35 miles.

Welcome to the forums Acid and Lazarus-g! Wow, our member numbers are growing nicely. Soon we'll be having great input in all the discplines from all over the world.

Acid and Roadster: I'm really trying for a 3hr 94.7 this year too. Although the 94.7 is a tough race, I find the last 20k's of the Argus brutal. The Blue Route and Hospital Bend just sapped all my energy this year. Aish, that last bit of Hospital Bend! It still gives me nightmares! Like you say, Ou Kaapse is a REAL climb, but the ride down on the other side is awesome!

Lazarus-g: Gee, buddy, how can you say road rides are boring? Have you ever sat in a bunch with 50 or 60 cyclists doing an average of 40km/h? ;D
hehe, don't worry, I catch your drift! I agree, a road race does seem boring to someone used to nerve-wrecking mtb'ing. I'd like to give it a go one day. Looks like fun!
Fortunately we all have one thing in common here: WE LUV CYCLING!

Welcome to the forum Lazarus-g
We have a couple of forums for MTB riders, you should check 'em out if you haven't already done so :)

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what sorta bike you ride, I hope you enjoy your stay here!

cheers!

i agree lazarus if you ride on the road with ur mtb it is not fun. this is cause it feels slow on the road and takes more effort on the road. ;D

i used to ride moslty the road on my mtb :D . on my biggest road mtb bike ride i was climbing the mountain and it was hard. then a road biker past me like i was standing still . That did it. i then got a road bike for the road. ;D its much more fun. I still use my mtb but for Dirt only :) i have a mountain range near my place so i do a big loop 80k its way cool through rain forest and fast decents and big climbs. barely any trafic :) maybe a car or 2 in the bush. is it flat over where you are?

100km in 1hr55min ?

Thats pretty damn fast, I take it noone has done it yet?

Nicholas , I live in South Wales UK. Which is a valley region definitly not flat :D because I live at the very bottom of the valley it's all uphill ;D . because I understand that it's a big world out there I know what we call a mountain many people would call a hill. but it's still fun to go up and down the damn thing. despite the fact that the south wales valley's are heavily built up with houses, within 50 yards of my house I'm off-road so it's not to bad.

To all you road riders, I do envy the speeds you get up to ! and Nicholas your right about being left standing by them . maybe I should see about a road bike and maybe one day I shall ,but how do you guys cope with the dicks who decide that bikers have no place on the road and as a result give you very little room (or none at all).

To get from one off-road track to another. I've got to use the roads for a few miles (and on XC tyres it ain't easy). but those drivers really bug me after the freedom I get Off-road.

Johannesburg South Africa
Network specialist.

I've done the Argus 3 times (best was 4h15). This will be my 4th 94.7 (best was 4h07). I've never ever trained realy hard, but this year that has changed. Changed the gear ratio on my bike for the race and have been training twice a day since the Lost City race.

Anyone doing the Hyper to Hyper? This is one great race. Nice and flat and fast. 100km my time last year was 2h24.

Howzit to all the SAfricans 8). Are we taking over this forum or what? LOL
I saw it 'advertised' on the pathetic CycleLab message board and thought I'd check it out since I have been looking for a quality cycling forum for a while.

I'm a Data Manager (satellite geology stuff and GIS software support) but may not be for long... retrenchments and all that :(

I'm busy training for the 94.7 too but this weather over the last 2 weeks has really stuffed me around. I'm seeded in the A bunch so hopefully should get a 2:45 time. Depends how the quality training goes in these next 2 weeks... This weekend will be telling. it's the last chance to get a long easy ride in.

My last Argus in 2000 was a 3:30 but it wasn't much fun starting from the back and trying to get through the crowd. Without Chapman's Peak it's just like riding any race around Jhb for me. I still may do it next year though.

ouzo, the H2H is my fave race. I've contested the A group sprint 3 times. This year we did 2:14 which was pretty quick. I got dropped on the hill up to Silver Ball because of a lack of adequate warm up (got to the race late :-[) and had to chase over the next 25kms to get to the leading bunch. That was a great feeling.

admin, that 100km in 1hr55min was impossible and they're rethinking the time bonus. It wa the first time they offered it. We had Robbie Hunter with some of his Lampre team mates here and they were still 25 minutes over the time. It was also dreadful weather with rain, wind and mist apparently.

looking at your times for the Argus and 94.7 it looks like you're a relatively good rider. Now this make me feel much better about my 2h24 in the H2H. Wow 10 minutes off the pace. Not bad.

Howzit buddies! The Vo2 is back in town! Had a GREAT weeks rest near the Wild Coast and an AWESOME Amashovashova race last weekend! I came in at 3hrs 20. What an awesome route! The climb up Inchanga Hill was everything I expected it to be...one of the toughest climbs I've done in my life! And THAT climb near the end of the race...GOH!!! I was averaging 5km/h up there! What a killer!
Anyway, time to hit the sack! Speak to you guys in the morning!

Hey Vo2

Have you ever tried the hills on the Jock? The race for Victory or Tour de Lesotho? Well I've done the first 2 but have yet to try the Lesotho race but I hear it's the toughest mountains in Southern Africa.

ouzo, 2:24 isn't a bad time for the H2H. That's how long it took me in 1998. ;) But my 2:14 was still 10 minutes off the pros.

Now that's one ride I would luv to do - The Tour de Lesotho! From what I've heard, even the pro's don't feel ashamed walking up the God Help Me climb!

I'm a 24 year old male from Sweden. I was a racer for 11 years but stopped some time ago. Now I'm back in school, studying at the Swedish National Sports Complex. I don't ride anymore but I follow this sport very closely, tv, magazines and on the internet of course. Sometimes live aswell.

Ik houd van Wielrennen ;D

dat ist loke
;D

so why did you stop riding it sounds like you where right up there. hmm what practice did you do to get your hr so low?
