Ahhh, but the weeks before that happen are the best. The tyres were never as
lightweight and the smoothness means lower drag through the air and on the
road. Then it goes bad...

Grr, tell me about it. First day out on my new bike I slashed the sidewall on some big bits of metal gravel ordinarily used for bedding down railway sleepers but handily placed on the bike path in bassendean/WA by some contractors. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Naturally I only had spare blue tyres, not red, but aldo in quantum just glued the sidewall slash back up with loctite 406 and ive since done a few km on it and it seems ok.

I replace mine once they've had 2-3 punctures, as a general rule.

i reckon it would be cheaper to continuously slip $5 notes into the rips and tears than buy a new tyre. Might have a few junkies crawling at your tyre though...

Seriously though, I find that once I start getting punctures all the time, it's time for a new tyre.

Mr Tuffy cures all. You can run tyres into the ground and get full value out of them, without the drama of flats (unless you get pinch flats from underinflation or bad riding).

I know people will [censored] about the weight penalty, but for a commuter or training wheels, it can't be beaten. (and for some of us the extra 30g of rotating mass is nothing in the whole scheme of things).
