I took off seven months with a stress fracture in my right
tibia. That's plenty of time to recover. I got custom
orthotics from the sports medicine guy. He put me on a
return to running plan that was so conservative that I
didn't even break a sweat for a month. I started running 8
minutes every other day for a week. Then 12. Then 15 minutes
two days one, one day off. Then 20. Keeping the two days on,
one day off routine, I've worked up from 20 to 23 and 26
minutes. I completed my first consecutive days of 26 minutes
on Mon and Tue. There was an occasional extra day off in
there once or twice, but I haven't run 3 days in a row in
two years.
The shin is not feeling well. I am definitely paranoid, and
discerning soreness and injury is hard for me at this stage.
But I feel like I should take an extra day off today. I'm
going slowly, and I don't know what else to do. I can't be a
runner and only run 10-13 miles a week. That's not going to
do me much good. But I don't seem to be holding up.
When you've rested twice as long as is normally
prescribed, you have orthotics, shoes are pretty new, what
else can be done?
