Really a good move by CSC and Bjarne Riis to get Ivan Basso
after Tyler Hamilton left. Basso wouldn't get the top spot as long
as he was with Fassa Bartolo and Petacchi. For CSC, looks to
be a move that will pay off for many more years.

I am sure not. Basso is riding great and I am sure Lance is taking notice.
Basso is for real. Keep in mind, Lance is not getting any younger. If
Lance had a team like T-mobile, he would be in very big trouble, just like
Jan is in.

My guess is Basso has little chance of matching Lance in the upcoming
time trials so Lance is probably glad to have somebody to help him
make time on others. But LA will probably find a stage to try and
attack him and knock some time off him before L'Alpe dHuez, unless
Lance blows Basso away in the first time trial.

It looked to me like the two were working together pretty well and
Basso made no attempt to ease up to make Lance lead out the sprint to
the finish, so Basso may be happy to have Lance ensure him the second
spot on the podium.

Yeah, if the can't win, 2nd sure looks good to him and a tip o' the
helmet to big Jan for keeping it warm for him.

Riis has been talking to Basso since 01 (the year where he abandoneded
with a broken collarbone after a crash in the Jura mountains - Basso
was in a break with Jallabert who won the stage).
However Basson signed with Feretti, because Riis opted to sign Hamilton
and couldn't afford to sign Basso beacause of the lack of a second
mainsponsor for the 02 season.

It wassn't excactly a surprise in Denmark when Riis signed Basso,
especially not considering Petachis transformation from beeing a
decent leadout man to a super sprinter.

Before Petachi Feretti's teams was kown as the team that would let all
rideres go for victory.
In the 80-90'es the big riders (eg Bugno) offered themselves to Feretti
and rode with him at a lower sallery because his "modern" approch to
teamtactics. Today riders offer themselves to Riis a a lower sallery.

BTW. Riis was with Feretti in 92/9,3 when he started his transformation
from Fignons super-domestic to a comming TDF winner.

Obviously he did not have a choice. Why is that so hard to believe? Did you
watch the Tour last year?

Lance may win, but he is not "miles" ahead of everyone. He is going to need
every bit of talent he has to win this Tour. Basso is way too strong to
allow Lance to make any mistakes. Lance has the edge with a better Tour
team, more experience winning, and a better ITT track record.

Huh? Basso was the GC man at the Tour last year. It is not a matter of "top
spot" but a matter of being with a DS and a team that knows how to win the
GC of a GT. I don't think Ferretti is very good at managing GC riders. He
has hurt more riders than he has helped. He is very demanding and his style
works for many situations but not for GC riders and getting a team together
to win the GC.

No, he wasn't. Aitor Gonzalez was. Basso won out by default because
Gonzalez abandoned, along with everyone else except Bruseghin and Cioni.

In the prologue Basso lost 27 seconds to Lance on a 6K ITT.

Extrapolate that out to 55K and you've got around 4 minutes.

If Basso expects to win the Tour some day, he's got to do better on
the TTs. I think he's proved over the last two days that he can
climb.

However, I did notice that he was suffering a lot today compared to
yesterday. He'll have a chance next week to run with Lance so we'll
see how much strength he has in the long run.
