  1. do you downshift when you are coming to a stop by a red light that is
unsafe to blow thru without stopping or do you just stand on the
    pedals
    when the light goes green?

I downshift with my right hand while braking with the left. I can also
drop a ring with my left thumb while braking, thanks to my Campy Ergos.

And I remember to blip the throttle while passing through neutral,
    too. --D-y

I try to remember to downshift, cause I've been caught a few times
trying to accelerate across an intersection and I'm in a really high gear.

    Yes.

    I stop for red lights.

I also stand on the pedals when starting from a stop.

My downshifting is to a "middle gear" - usually, about 60 gear
inches. This gives me my best compromise for starting: low enough to
accelerate quickly, high enough to make it through the intersection
    without having to upshift.

    Sometimes I downshift, sometimes I don't. If I'm in a 53 x 12, I
definitely downshift but that's very rare as I get older and stopped
racing. If I'm in a middle gear- say 70" or so- I don't downshift. In
fact there are days I'll go out on a 50 mile ride and never shift more
than two or three times. It's not that hilly around here, and taking
off in a tall gear from a stop isn't that bad, unless it's a silly-tall
    gear.

    Well, duh, of course.

Yup, both hands on the bars, not too tight.

    I don't "blow" stop lights, either <g>.

The latter. In city traffic stay in one biggish gear.
Getting going from a dead stop is much easier
than you may think. Clip in to one pedal at its
top, push off a bit with the other leg, stand on
the pedal, and with little enough effort you are
    moving right along.

I do all my city riding in a 75-80 inch gear.
No worries about shifting, more attention on
traffic. I started doing it when simulating
a single speed bicycle as an experiment.

The bicycle sign blowers revel all right, and let those law-abiders
(cyclists, that is) let them know of their contempt.
