  1. I think I posted about being the recipient of two bags of Streit's' egg
barley/farfel over the weekend. My plan was to have another run at the
Farfel-less Farfel and Mushrooms that I wound up making last week, this
time WITH the real deal, thanks to sd. :-)

So, I diced up two small/medium onions and fried them up on some olive
oil and butter. Removed them from the pan and sauteed a couple cups of
chopped mushrooms -- the rest of the oyster/portabella/button blend that
I'd bought and added them to the mushrooms. Then I put the farfel into
the pan and stuck it in the oven to toast. As with my earlier
experience, I set a timer for 10 minutes (of the 30 it's supposed to
take). As with my earlier experience, good thing! At 10 minutes, it
was golden brown and ready to have the broth (1-1/2 cups homemade
chicken broth) added. I did and put it in the oven at 300 degrees,
covered, for about 10 minutes, then took the cover off, stirred it, and
upped the temp to 350 and put it back for another 10 minutes or so,
    uncovered.

This is mighty fine and supports Margaret's statement that orzo ain't
    nuthin' like farfel.

It's tasty but it didn't take my mind off the news I'd just received
from the daughter of my friend The Widow Geraldine. Gerri died last
night/this morning. Probably of a heart attack (symptoms of indigestion
mentioned). She was spending 6 weeks with her son in St. Louis before
heading further south to her brothers in Mississippi for another 6
weeks. Damn. She was a piece of work and I'll miss her. Chris
suggested that I bring some peanut brittle to her wake or funeral
luncheon. I think I might. Gerri and her friend Judy made copious
amounts of peanut brittle every year for Christmas gifts, pulling it to
a gossamer thinness. She wouldn't believe me when I told her it tasted
    like cigarette smoke. 8~(

I'm sorry for your loss. Your peanut brittle looks good enough to
eat, so I'd agree with you that it would be an appropriate addition to
her memorial service luncheon. It'll bring back good memories to all
who had eaten her peanut brittle over the years.

PVC! Haven't seen you in awhile. How is everything going for you?
Have you done your Christmas baking and candy making yet? We've only
got a week and a half. Better hustle!

I'm making a lot of candy this year. E-mail me your address, and I'll
send you some. I'll bet Barb would be happy to share some of her
    peanut brittle with you, too.

    Happy holidays!

Point taken. But rather apt. I am certainly glad I don't worry about
funerals and funeral food. There's a good reason; I don't go to funerals
and I don't go to weddings, either. They are both bound to have bad food
because, after all, the event isn't about the food. Not like going to a
    restaurant 🙂

We sent Crash's dad off with a can of beer on the ground above the box
that contained his ashes. The can kept tipping over, so we figured he
really wanted that beer. We opened the can and allowed the beer to
    pour into the soil. *smile*

???? You don't go to funerals and weddings because the food isn't very

Funerals are not about the food. It is about respect for the deceased and
support for the family and friends who have suffered a loss, sometimes sudden
and sometimes the end of a stressful period of fear illness and suffering.

Most of the weddings I have attended had excellent food. The only wedding
dinners that I have found disappointing were the Italian weddings.
Invariably I hear from other guests, mostly with Italian roots, about how
boring "English" cooking and how Italian meals have so many courses and so
much variation. Yeah, tell me about it.... a plate of antipasto, often a
plate with s a couple olives, a few slices of cheese and cold cuts. Then
comes the soup... chicken noodle or some variation on the theme. Then comes
the pasta course, some variation of pasta shape and a red sauce, served with
a shaker or bowl of plastic Parmesan from a can. The main course will be
roasted chicken pieces, some dried out veal, maybe roast beef, roasted
potatoes, beans and carrots. I have been to a number of them, and the food is
always the same. Their saving grace is that there are all those courses and
lots of food so there may be something good to eat.

No, silly. I wrote it wrong. I don't attend weddings or funerals on
general principle. In the last 20 years they are a wake either way, food be
