  1. Hi all,

    I am looking for wheels for racing (but not only). Reasonably
    aerodynamic and light, but first and foremost stiff. Also not too
    delicate (for bad roads, cobblestones, etc. ). Suitable for shimano 10
    casette, rider weight: 80 kg.

    My current candidates are:
    1.Ritchey WCS Protocols
    2.American Classic 420 (Bladed spokes)
    3.Shimano Dura Ace (WH-7800)
    4.Mavic Ksyrium Elite

    Could you recommend any of those, or mayby sth else at this price
    level? Please justify suggestion if possibble. Thanks in advance.

    Searching this group will give you the same answer, ad nauseum:
    traditional hand built wheels will be far less expensive, just as
    light, and often more durable than the boutique stuff.

    Post your weight and other variables and you'll likely get a solid
    recommendation from a wheel builder as to which spoke count, lacing
    pattern, rim, and hub would be appropriate.

    Some of these, you could have two sets of handbuilts with careful
    shopping for the price. Maximizing ride time, minimizing cost/mile.
    Rims can be chosen for lightness, aero, spoke count, color, whatever,
    and freely mixed in use, as long as the brake tracks (and gear
    clusters, of course) interchange. IOW, you can have a daily wheelset
    and a special racing one, quick changeout and no fiddling on race day.

    In the long run, hubs usually outlast rims. Replacing a rim (brass
    nipples, please) is cheaper than replacing an entire wheel.

    I've seen some amazing prices for "boutique" rims. Velocity Aerohead/
    OC are readily available and laughingly cheap, by comparison to some.
    Same for some 'tiquer spokes/nipples, and the special tools some
    configs require. Not to mention "factory service" being required in
    some cases from I what I've seen.

    Check the weight, aero, stiffness info available by google for
    yourself on "factory" v. "built" wheels. I do see people getting
    reasonable use from proprietary wheels; from my very limited exposure
    I'd have to say, over the last five years or so, there seems to have
    been improvement with at least some "brand" wheels, but not all, for
    sure.

    "Trick" can also be something that _doesn't_ break, especially if the
    weight/aero are the same or close <g>. --D-y

    traditional hand built wheels will be far less expensive, just as
    light, and often more durable than the boutique stuff.

    but here's the rub: it's hard/impossible to find a decent wheel builder.
    trust me, i've done a lot of homework on this here in the bay area,
    and we have lots of bike shops. there's many that /tell/ you they're
    good, but at my size and weight, i've only one that has been able to
    build a wheel that stays true for me. conversely, i've never had a
    problem with out-of-the-box wheels from shimano and mavic - they
    continue to remain perfectly true after many thousands of miles. even
    if you're paying more*, it's worth it for the much increased probability
    of quality.

    * - the price argument doesn't hold. my mavic cosmos wheels were priced
    at $300 full retail [$260 with a few calls]. otoh, i rode some while
    back with a guy who was enthusing about the "hand built triathlon"
    wheels he'd just been sold by a certain bike shop in the sf marina
    district. he'd been liberated from $450 for a pair of plain jane cxp21
    rims, plain gauge spokes and no-name hubs. and they weren't
    particularly true. where's the price advantage there?

    Sorry that you're unable to find a wheelbuilder, it's really not that
    hard. There are plenty of well respected people that can serve you
    well via mail order.

    Again, what's the point? That you know somebody that got suckered?
    $300 gets a really sweet and durable set of hand builts at my LBS.

    it does at mine too, once i found someone that knew what they were
    doing. but the point is, for every person that /says/ they're good at
    building wheels, there are 20 that are hopeless. i'm all for the well
    built wheel, but unless you are lucky enough to have access to a guru,
    or you want to go mail order, pre-built wheels are a great call.
    seriously. /i/ build a great wheel. but if i can buy a fast light
    wheel that stays true for less than the parts if i bought them
    separately, /and/ in the case of the mavic, it comes with straight pull
    spokes, i'm going to buy it! to /not/ do so is ignorance or pedantry.

    FWIW in the SF/Bay Area John Ackley in Richmond seems quite good,
    built two sets for me. One I've put a lot of miles and they are yet to
    need trueing. I've also heard good things about Jitensho in Berkely and
    Tim and Left Coast Cyclry.

    If I were buying boutique wheels, I'd take a hard look at the Zipp Team
    CSC which seems like a fairly lightweight set that is built to last and be
    repairable if needed.

    I ordered a set of hand-built wheels from a well-known national mail
    order shop that happens to be in my area:

    DT 240 hubs (28sp), DT Aerolite spokes, DT RR1.1 rims; front is x2,
    rear is x3. Weight is 1427g for the pair.

    I weigh 70-75kg and ride some rough pavement and gravel roads. These
    wheels are relatively aero and quite light. I use them as everyday
    training wheels and they've stayed true. They are nicely stable on
    high speed decents. Price was about $750.

    ....also concurs on the Neuvation recommendation as a value leader with
    surprisingly good aero.

    Note that the two things that would sway me on a mainly-racing wheelset
    for a non-pro would be aerodynamics and durability/repairability.

    Aero matters more than weight in all but steep (and I mean surprisingly
    steep) climbs. So unless you're trying to beat Tyler to the top of Mt.
    Washington, optimize for aero.

    The durability thing is because there are virtually no wheels using
    frou-frou spokes or other goofy bits that do not have an aero-equivalent
    counterpart that costs the same or less. Given a wheel that can be fixed
    between races and one that requires magic factory spokes, go for the
    former.

    Heck, I've had minor troubles sourcing bladed spokes from local bike
    shops, even ones that specialize in road bikes. But even then you can
    substitute a plain round spoke with minimal ill effects.

    You may also wish to keep in mind the important lesson taught to me one
    day as I walked away from a training-race crash with a fellow victim,
    who was carrying a now-foldable carbon fibre wheel: keep the really good
    stuff for the important races, and leave the training wheels on
    otherwise.

    That wheel was worth more than the bike I was riding, I think...

    Thanks for the pitch. I think my position is when you compare
    wheel(outta a box) to wheel(made from components at a good
    wheelbuilder), I wonder what you get for your money. Mavic
    Elites...Poor design rear hub(imo, needs a lot of upkeep), aluminum
    rim and stainless steel spokes. If you use a better rear hub, aluminum
    rim and stainless steel spokes, most likely the same price(NOT talking
    discounts here, even if those do abound, retail for retail prices).
    Sameish low end type hub, similar rim and spokes, less $. Much more
    prevelent with high end wheels and Kry-4-me siriums are our main
    target. Poor rear hub, questionable aluminum spokes, aluminum rim that
    mavic may or may not support in the future(all rims wear out,
    BTW)...for $800 to $1100(ES)..Using a better hub(shimano, Campagnolo,
    DT), DT, Velocity rim, DT spokes, similar wheel weight, let's assume
    same reliability, but for less money. Not flashy, no wheel bags, no
    big stickers, no coffee shop points, but seems that a well designed
    and built 'handbuilt', designed specifically for the rider, for less
    $, would be a better idea. BUT..wheels outta boxes, mostly due to OEM
    pricing on a complete bike, is what ya see...what riders see, they go
    to bike shops to try to buy.

    I'm certain you meant to reflect reality, here. Hand-built, custom-to-order
    wheels are "boutique". Generic, factory built wheels are not "boutique".
    Interesting, how one may insidiously pervert perfectly simply language to
    try to make a point. A point you can fairly make, too. But the premise I
    was rebutting was that there are enough Peter's in the industry to satisfy
    the demand at a price level that the market will widely bear. I am
    presuming, of course, that the OP asked his question as he did, because he
    had already found no good candidate to custom build boutique wheels.

    No, I suggested that bosses are concerned about keeping labor costs down
    and that they may not give their workers time to use their intelligence to
    the full. It seems like an absolutely unremarkable proposition to me. Do
    you think McDonald's gives its workers time to add that extra little touch
    to a hamburger?

    I don't see anything like that on the FSA site. The Vuelta site shows a
    700C wheel being built largely by machine:

    There's a person at the beginning who does the lacing. No one argues that
    factory wheels are improperly laced. There's also a person at the end who
    appears to be fine-tuning the wheel's trueness and roundness. There's no
    indication that he's bringing the spoke tension up (in fact, there's a
    step earlier in the video where spoke glue is applied, suggesting
    that the wheels may be under-tensioned). Nor is there any indication that
    the wheels are stress relieved. Those are two objections frequently lodged
    against machine-built wheels which the video does not dispel.

    post it. But their print publicity very specifically details the process.

    In some cases, Asian products probably are inferior (American and
    European tools, for instance, are generally thought to be better than
    tools from Asian manufacturers outside of Japan and are able to command a
    premium because of that). In the past, it was certainly the case that many
    Asian products were inferior to those from American and European
    competitors. Saying that does not entail any judgment about whether Asian
    workers are subhuman. Levels of industrialization and training play a role
    in such matters.

    My evidence is here on rbt -- remarks by Jobst that factory wheels are
    undertensioned and that the machines are not set up to do stress
    relieving. Also, remarks by Peter Chisholm and other experienced wheel
    builders that they often see factory wheels that require further work.
    (You're not trying to suggest that Peter is subhuman, are you?) Finally,
    reports, like that from the OP in this thread, of poorly built factory
    wheels.

    Aside from wheels, anyone who has worked in a factory or other
    profit-making enterprise could tell you that the quality of the product is
    often sacrificed in the interest of making a profit. Frankly, I think it's
    such common knowledge that I see no reason to argue the point with you.

    I used the words "appears" and "suggesting" only because its possible that
    Vuelta uses procedures that are not captured in the video. Another way of
    saying the same thing is that the evidence you claim proves your point
    doesn't in fact rule out all objections.

    No, not necessarily. I started building my own wheels because of an
    incompetent job by a bike shop. Nonetheless, there are some shops I trust
    more than others, just as there are some manufacturers that I trust more
    than others, despite the fact that all are under time constraints.
