Wheelbuilding w/discs - spokes?

  1. Hey all,

    I'm building up some 32 hole King ISO hubs with Mavic 3.1 rims.

    They are going to replace some standard King hubs w/ 517s as I change a couple of bikes out to
    Avid discs.

    Previously, the woman rider (120lbs loaded with camelback) had 28 hole f/r with revolutions,
    straightlaced on the front, 3x rear. alloy nipples. very light wheels.

    The other rider (185lb) had 32 hole 3x f/r, both revolutions, alloy nipples.

    Both rode for 2 years, hard, without a need to even true the wheels. Good performance.

    Anyway, everyone seems to recommend 14/15 db spokes for disc wheels. Why? Seems like disc brakes
    would cause less stress on the spokes, and if the revolutions worked before, why not again? Anything
    wrong with straight lacing the disc wheel front for the light rider?

    Finally, I have not built up a wheel with the UST 3.1s yet. How do the spoke holes work - standard
    spokes or special spokes like the ksyriums?

    Disc brakes cause more stress on the spokes, and the entire wheel, too.

    And, radial lacing + disc brakes = bad idea.

  3. spokes in disk braked wheels get stressed more than ordinary wheels, so skinny spokes working closer
    to their peak load.

    it's best to stick with the 14/15/14's. i /have/ seen people build with
    14/16/14's on disk wheels, but the rider was a bantam weight and the wheels were hideously out of
    true inside a week.

    Just to elaborate on this, rim brakes introduce no torque force to the wheel. In contrast, disc
    brakes rely on the spokes to distribute the torque of stopping entirely. This adds additional stress
    to the wheel, stress that a radial wheel is least able to distribute effectively. As far as spoke
    choice goes, 14/15 db is the "standard" by which all other wheels are measured. Generally, you can
    build a bullet-proof wheel for just about any application with these spokes. Revolutions will work
    in certain applications and when built well will be fine for many applications. I think your 120lb
    female will be fine with Revos and discs, but I might err on the side of caution with your other
    rider and use 14/15. You should DEFINITELY use 3x (at least 2x...the weight difference is minimal
    unless you're a pro rider..) and I've never personally liked alloy nipples. I'd rather use regular
    brass and since you're switching to discs, I don't think weight is an issue.

    Gee, that's novel. To what do you attribute that? Are you claiming the center section of the spokes
    _changed_ in some way during the week?

    I suppose we should also avoid rims with the same color sticker as those wheels. After all,
    they "were hideously out of true inside a week". I hope I don't have any wheels with the same
    color sticker.

    Make sure you blue loctite the 'nipples'(Rim inserts) of the 3.1 and make them TIGHT!!

    no. i'm saying that the builder didn't follow manufacturers recommendations - just like they didn't
    read the book on how to build the wheel properly. laziness in one area is frequently associated with
    laziness in another.
