FSA RD-40: oh, if only they were more dependable...here in Italy FSA wheels are considered quite a dangerous acquirement, we have many cases of broken rims or hubs. Ok: there are no problems with the FSA, if you break a rim during the guarantee time they will chenge the wheel without any problem, but you'll waste time...

Around that price you should find a pair of Neutron or even Eurus 2006 (NOS). THOSE are wheels, try their hubs and you'll discover a new world. (remember that fulcrum is a branch of Campagnolo, R5 are similar to Zonda or so).

Remember that alu, low-profile rims are quite equivalent, but the spokes and the hubs can change radically; that's the difference between a 500$ wheel and a 1000$ wheel :-P

Neuvation is a small American company.Tha hard part is if money is no object then go out and by wheel sets and if you don't like them then go out and buy new ones. I just read and here so many people getting new wheel sets then selling them because they say they are slow or not reliable. The wife would kill me if I get a set of wheels and said they are slow and I need to get a new set.

I have a set of Fulcrum 5s, they are very nice, and I haven't had any problems in the year that I have been riding them for training. However....I only weigh 65 kg (about 145 lbs). Also, they have radial spokes in the front and non-drive side rear. So would they be ok for you? There's no guarantees. Go with handbuilt....cheap, reliable (if built by a reputable shop), and easily repaired. FWIW, my other training wheelset is a set of Mavic CXP 22s on Veloce hubs, built 3 cross with brass nipples and 14g spokes. Pretty bombproof.

I'm looking at the Fulcurm R5 over Neuvation r28 sl3 at this moument. But I am going to call my bike shops and see if they can do any thing. I know some shop don't do custom wheels. They say there is no money for them because of the internet.

Agree with the custom wheel route since you'll get a better set than ready made wheelsets for the budget.

Your LBS is an idiot for blaming the internet for his lack of knowledge on how to build wheels. If he sells hubs he makes money out of hubs. If he sells spokes/nipples, he makes money out of selling those. If he sells rims, he will make money out of selling those and certainly he will make money from labor charges for building wheels.

- my LBS also does not favour the building of wheels anymore because
of the easy availability of good-quality complete-wheelsets from big
names.

- that , and consumers prefer (whether rightly or wrongly) factory-built wheels.
