  1. What's the Memorial day line up for everyone? I'm grilling burgers and hot
dogs. Nick, Josh and various assorted friends will be here. I'm thinking of
running to the store for some pork steaks too. Kraut and vidalia onions
for the hot dogs is a must along with some mustard. I hope Missy doesn't
get pushy and [censored] food from the grill. I'm making slaw and potato salad.
Thats about it besides some snacks. Chips, crudites and some pickled
sausages. Too late to do jerky. Oh, and I've got some Greek olives to knosh
    on. Good stuff.

The weather here is awesome. I've had a long weekend already and I just
want to relax and kick back. Hope you all have a nice long (safe) holiday.

Sounds good, Michael. Not too labour-intensive, which is nice.

I'm not doing anything. I'm flying to Kansas City June 1st so I've used up
the leftovers in the fridge with the exception of 2 leeks and some small red
potatoes (of course I'll make a pot of tattie-leek soup with those!). I'm
trying to avoid cooking anything else which might *result* in leftovers. My
    over-the-fridge freezer is full.

Thank you! It's supposed to rain here tonight and tomorrow. But at least
the temps are mild. You have a fun and safe Memorial Day!

Our holiday started last night. Friends from Denmark and the East
Coast gathered at my house. I asked my son to make his version of
carnitas which were accompanied by tortillas, Mexican style rice,
pinto beans, salsa and guacamole. A friend brought a great salad made
with pears and blue cheese and of course everything was washed down
with copious amounts of Margaritas and other libations.

Today, we're going up to Sonoma to our annual "friends" picnic. It
isn't orchestrated this year; it's a potluck. We're bringing Hebrew
National hot dogs and Italian Sausages to put on the grill.

We'll spend the night in Sonoma and wind down after the picnic with
several other couples who are staying overnight too. Monday we'll
help keep the economy in motion in town (shop 'til you drop).

In a few minutes we are heading over to some friend's house. Steve is an
ex-marine and will be in the local parade and services tomorrow but he'll be
    cooking today. .

We're taking an Italian "sandwich" of capicola, pepper salami, ham, couple
of cheeses, basil on garlic bread. Makes for a good appetizer when sliced
up. Also taking a cheese pasta dish that is baked, as a couple bottles of
    wine.

I *love* carnitas. Sounds wonderful. I love Mexican and Southwestern food
    anyway.

I am totally worried about Missy. She's really sick. Steven took her to

losing her. She is my pal.

AWWWWW 🙁 I hope she's okay. You'd be surprised. My Sampson became very
ill at 15 and the vet thought he was failing but he rallied like a trooper

What's the Memorial day line up for everyone?

Everybody's menus sound great. We're having friends over this
afternoon. We'll grill a spice-rubbed flank steak and slice it thin for
fajitas w/ grilled onion and peppers and all the fixin's. Plus, bean
dip and chips, corn and tomato salad, and fresh fruit. Ice cream cones
(cookies & cream) for dessert. Sangria, beer, soda.

Last night's dinner was a good one -- my in-laws unexpectedly offered to
babysit (yay!) and so Bob and I went to one of our favorite restaurants,
L'Auberge Chez Francois (in the Virginia suburbs of D.C.). We like to
dine on the terrace there -- it's very peaceful, with lots of trees, a
babbling fountain, the restaurants herb garden, and a handful of
    widely-spaced tables scattered about.

While we perused our menus, we nibbled on bread -- they had a yummy rye
bread w/ an herbed cottage cheese, a raisin walnut bread, and a
    wonderfully crusty, dense peasant-type bread.

For starters, Bob had a tuna tartare martini -- the tuna was mixed w/
lime juice, and topped w/ vodka sour cream and caviar. I had
boulliabaisse, which came with to-die-for buttery croutons. That was
followed by a little piece of quiche, and then a salad of mixed greens
and sprouts, roquefort cheese, a few caramelized apples. Tasty. Mango
sorbet topped w/ a candied violet followed. Then we got our entrees...I
had Dover sole topped with onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach and
lobster, with potatoes and asparagus on the side. The fish was seasoned
really nicely, and all the ingredients tasted wonderful together. I had
a glass of Reisling. Bob had lobster (shelled) with a delicious
butter/sauterne sauce and tropical fruit. Everything was yummy. They
brought us a side dish of root vegetable puree, which was nicely sweet
and tasty, but we didn't eat much of it...we were running short on space
    by that time.

Dessert was a little disappointing -- the restaurant no longer serves
the mixed berry/sabayon gratin that we usually order there (oh well, I
can make it at home). So I had the plum [censored] with cinnamon ice cream,
which was not as good as it was last time I had it there, and Bob had
    creme caramel, which he liked.

It was a gorgeous night, and I would've been happy eating PB&J on that
    quiet little terrace.

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

A cookout at our corner bar tomorrow, always lotsa good stuff - Wisconsin
brats, buffalo burgers, pork roasts, etc. I am making tater salad and cole
slaw. The slaw will be more of a "health slaw" type of thing, I am doing a
citrus - y dressing for it, has key lime juice, ginger, salad oil and a
    splash of sesame oil...

I am really into "citrus - y" stuff lately, e.g. salad dresssings,
    marinades, etc.

Working as usual. We're having a run of ATV accidents by people (older

coke.....but other than that it's just another weekend for the gun and

My weekend (and the next two weeks) sort of got better, I've been medically
suspended as on of our anaesthetists has contracted chicken pox and I've no

keep their fingers crossed that I don't break out! (Tuesday to Friday is the

It sounds like you'll have a nice weekend. Your barbeque sounds like
the typical ones we had within the family. Yeah, relax, kick back and
    enjoy yourselves.

I did grilling 2 days ago, a brined chicken on the rotisserie. It was
a very plump chicken and ended up being moist and had a nice smoked
taste. I put a rub on it and no sauce and put limes in the cavity.
Part of it ended up in a King Ranch casserole thing. I know, but I
only used one can of soup and hubby likes it.

It looks a little ominous here and we may get a storm. I am going to
make green chili the Colorado way. I posted the recipe before, which I
got from a woman in speech class, as she demonstrated how to make it
there. When I brown the flour I do a lot of it and save it for later.
This will have lots of garlic, Anaheims and one jalapeno. I have found
the jalapenos I've bought recently to be very hot. Oh, and pork.
Tomatoes but no tomatillos. I'll serve a chuncky avocado/tomato/onion
salad and there will be tortillas, grated cheese and sour cream on the
side. I think the best part of green chili is all the sauce or whatever
you call it - I just love the flavor. Sometimes I pour a can of beer
    into it.

    Have a fine holiday!

We're pretty much taking today off. I'll spend some time later, weeding
the rose bed and laying mulch. I have to do it a little at a time, so it's
coming along slowly, but it *is* coming along.

The dinner plan for today is for chicken salad sandwiches, made from
leftover Mimi's Sticky Chicken, coward's edition.

I've got some beef thingies thawing so we can grill them tomorrow. The
butcher shop called the thingies, "bacon-wrapped flank steak." It's tough
meat that's been tenderized all to hell, then rolled, surrounded by bacon,
and secured with a toothpick. They're not bad, and they were cheap. I'll
probably do some boxed au gratin potatoes and some green beans or peas.

66F and sunny today. Hopefully, tomorrow will be nice, too. so we can
    spend some time outdoors.

Crash's hip is worse than it's been so far, and he's sleeping. I'm glad we
have a king size bed now, because I was viciously punching and kicking
someone in my sleep again last night, and Crash was able to stay out of the
line of fire. Got a little PTSD going here.

Sounds like a nice day planned, Michael.

My in-laws are visiting us from CA for a couple more days. We've been
marinating assorted chicken parts in cider vinegar, oil, poultry
seasoning, and s/p since yesterday. We'll smoke 'em for several hours
tomorrow and serve with roasted asparagus, roasted potato salad, and a
nice tomato and avocado salad. Lots of margaritas and beer, of course.

Last night's dinner was stuffed meatloaf (mix up meatloaf as usual, then
flatten out into a large rectangular shape; top with seasoned tomato
paste, thinly-sliced ham, and cheddar and mozzarella cheeses; roll up
jelly-roll fashion and seal edges; top with diced tomatoes and bake at
350 for an hour or so), "fauxtatoes" (pureed steamed cauliflower mixed
with a bit of cream and spices), Italian green beans, and mixed green
salad. Tonight's dinner will be at Rockfish Seafood (we have soooo many
restaurants in the Houston suburb where we live, but we usually go out
to eat only when people visit).

Hope everyone has a relaxing and safe Memorial Day.

Saturday: Graduation parties for friends and neighbors' kids.

Sunday: Yardwork, planting annuals, making sure the sprinkler
system works so the lawn and flower beds don't die while we're
on vacation and the annuals start to get acclimated. Now we
keep our fingers crossed that the snow is over for the summer.
    (You never know here!)

We leave 6/6 for a combined vacation/conference, two weeks in Kauai
and Waikiki. It's a tough assignment, but somebody's gotta
    do it. ;-)

Monday: finish yardwork, cookout with the kids.

We don't have Memorial Day, but I like to honour it anyway because my father in
law was American and served in France during WW I, and when in France a few
years ago we visited the beautiful American War Cemetery in the Meause Argonne
    where he had seen action.

This has been self indulgent weekend. We went out for dinner on Friday to
celebrate our 32nd anniversary. I had a nice rack of lamb and my wife had
roasted breast and leg of duck on oriental noodles with Thai spices. Last night
we were at my mothers for a great dinner. Tonight we are having grilled chicken
breasts, asparagus and salad, fresh Italian bread. For dessert we will behaving
fresh strawberries on home made vanilla ice cream.

I was up and about early this morning. Being retired, I don't use the alarm
clock during the week, but I have to get up early Sunday mornings for my
riding lesson. Got home in time for a nice brunch, did some weeding in the
    garden.
