I have a pretty doggone nice circa 1979 or 1980 Peugeot. It's not a PX-10 but it's a pretty high end model -- I think Vitus something-or-other butted tubing. Really just in super sweet condition with all the authentic Simplex, Stronglight, Phillippe etc. parts. But it needs a new set of wheels -- and I think I would like to get clinchers rather than another set of tubulars (it came with a cool Mavic tubular wheelset). The Normandy hubs aren't really that smooth, so if I re-use them I guess they'll need overhauling.
Can anyone recommend a period-appropriate touring-type rim (I guess French, as every other piece of this bike is)? I believe the hubs are 36'. I would like to run somewhat fat tires, like maybe 28s or even 32s if they will fit.
Mavic MA3. They're considered classic now by some. I'm not sure if you'll squeeze 28's on them though. They come in 32 and 36 hole and a nice silver finish. They're quite cheap too.

I had an MA3 handbuilt for my rear wheel on my training bike. The rim is really heavy, but I didn't really care as it's on my training bike. However, it was cheap, and it's held up nicely.

I've run 28's on them without any problems. If you strip off those silly decals that they put on the new ones, they should fit right in with the rest of the bike.
Guys, what about the older MA-2s? Those sound like just the ticket -- being un-anodized they're a bit more old school -- but I don't know where to score a 36' pair of those hoops. Anyone know if they can still be had?

MA-2s would definitely be a good choice but Mavic doesn't make them anymore. They occasinally pop-up on eBay but they seem to be sort of a "cult" item because they always get a lot of bids and they often end-up going for more than a person would think they'd go for.
