    One of my bikes is an old Hillman custom steel frame road bike. It's a lovely ride from a respected Australian frame builder. Originally a loaner from a mate, I have now taken ownership. The frame is a little big for me, and I much prefer my new bike (Look KG451) which is a perfect fit. I don't want to throw the Hillman away cause it's such a nice ride, and despite the size difference to my new ride, I rode the Hillman for a year without complaint, including an 200km mountain event. It's about 10 years old and is beaten round a fair bit. I would estimate a couple hundred bucks to get it riding nicely.

    7 speed 105
    Mavic Open 4CD rims

    ps. I wouldn't want to upgrade to 9 or 10 spd as the cost would be too great.

    What do you think I should do with it? I mostly ride day events in the hills, but also spin with friends a lot. I commute to work on the Look, and am now getting interested in amateur stage races.

    I commuted for three years on my Colnago, until I pretty much wore the thing out. It's really expensive to commute on your race bike, as the wear and tear from commuting (especially if you ride in the rain) is phenomenal.

    Ideally you need a really special bike to race (or for Sunday social rides, if racing's not your gig), another fairly nice bike for longer training rides (maybe Audaxing...), and as a running spare for the race bike, a tough bike with cheap tyres for commuting, a time-trial bike, and a fixed wheel or two just for the fun of it.

    That's the road bikes, anyway. If you're also into mountain bikes, or track, or tandeming, or touring, then you're well and truly done for.

    The best way to go for now though is to adopt the (n+1) rule, whereby you always need just one more bike than the number you have at present. It's a little easier to justify that way.

    Oh, and _never_ let your other half see all the bikes in one place, or else you're done for. Keep a couple in the spare room, a few in the loungeroom, and a few more hidden in the back of the garage. Seeing two or three bikes in one place is usually okay. Seeing half a dozen or eight will get you in serious strife.

    I, very graciously, bitzed my MTB to build up my partner's tourer. This opened the opportunity for me to get another bike as we were now even. Perhaps look for similar?

    i think i have mentioned previously a mate in Adelaide who has 4 bikes, all the same colour as his origonal red cannondale. 'Her-indoors' is banned from the shed so only sees one at a time as it rolls past the kitchen window, hence she thinks he only owns one bike!!!
