  1. I'm not big into the whole mountain biking thing, but I did start riding a lot this past spring. I
lost 30 pounds, been eating well, lifting weights etc. Now that it's getting cold and the light is
limited, I don't know what to do. Stick to the warm clothes and weekend? Any suggestions? I work
until 5:30 during the week and well, while there is still light now, in a few short weeks there
won't be. I don't want to go gain the weight back and I can't buy an indoor bike for a number of
    reasons. Space and moolaa. Help!

I suppose adding lights to my bike would work... just not sure if I can take the 30 degree rides in
the dark. I'll have to think of something else until spring time.

30 degree rides in the dark aren't that bad. Dressed right it's quite fun. Don't over dress. You
should be chilly at the trailhead. Pack a jacket in case of breakdowns and a backup light.

  10. Get a light.....Riding at night will improve your MTB skills..... Don't go with the cheepest....You
will get what you pay for......

You will probably have heard all these suggestions by now, but here's a few thoughts:

Buy lights to ride at night A bike doesn't take up *that* much space on a trainer. (I found one at a
thrift store for $15) Join a club and do the spin classes before or after work Run and/or ride
during your lunch break at work Use the lights from No. 1 above to enable you to commute to/from
work Buy 2 cinder blocks. Step up then down about a thousand times 4x a week (no, I'm not really
kidding) Carefully watch your diet, and find fun things to do for "exercise" that will work you up
to a sweat for about 30 minutes Use your weight lifting to do lunges, front shoulder squats, hack
lifts, calf raises and other exercises somewhat specific to mtnbiking. Low weight, high reps. Get a
training partner to hold you accountable to your winter goals Buy a nordic-trak that can always be
    found at yard sales.

You'll have to fight to retain your fitness and weight loss. There's nothing like winter time to
tempt you to stay indoors, eat all that Holiday food lay around, watch tv and get fat and lazy.

30F, really isn't that cold. I've been doing 20F rides to school for the last 2 weeks. In a month
I'll still be riding in -10F conditions. In two months I'll continue riding in the -30 F, that's -35
    Celsius. Got to love Canada.

Hmm. My nipples get hard in the cold.

    I like it.

Therefore, I ride in the cold. You should, too. Maybe yours will get hard too.

Hey Phil, there's a name I see from alt.binaries.sportbikes.... don't you live in florida?? You
don't know hard nipples till you've tweaked them at 25 below (why it must be minus 60 with the wind
chill!). Aahhhh.... life in the great white northeast, where you prefer it at least -5 because then
the snowmobile trails are hard enough to bike on, with studded tires of course!

Cold can't hurt you if you dress properly. People walk, run, ski, work, etc. in butt freezing cold,
    night and day.

You did get plenty of suggestions, and here is one from me. Since you are lifting some steel
occasionally, try Istvan Javorek complexes. His web is www.geocities.com/ijavorek. You can do it at
home, office if you don't mind sweat and gym.

Buy your self a NiteRider Blowtorch, we did last year and it changed our lives, we could keep biking
through the dark and cold of the Swedish winter.

Running and swimming. When you're short of time, heading out for a run takes only half an hour and
is very good for your aerobic fitness. Also, it's free and most of your bike clothing is
    transitional.

Swimming offers a more all-round workout and has the bonus of being nice and warm indoors. Pretty
cheap to do, and you can hit the pool on your way to / from work.

    Go riding at the weekend.
